Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

We have this model GE gss201eta has been recalled at some point so this is the second one we have had. first it was making a lot of noise. now the coils in the freezer freeze up and the fridge gets warm. so we undo it and take the hair dryer and get the ice off the coils and it last about a week. do the same thing over again. it is really getting old doing this. do you know what the problem is and would it be cheaper to fix it ourselves or buy a new one?

SOURCE: freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your problem..Catriver..post back.

SOURCE: GE GSL22JFPH BS refrigerator, coils icing up

I'm in the process of fixing the same problem on a GSS22JEPDWW right now. There are several parts in the defrost circuit that I can tell:
1) Defrost Heater
2) DefrostThermostat
3) Temp Sensor (Thermistor)
4) Main Control Board
I've replaced the Defrost Heater (remove back panel of freezer section - it's a stainless steel bracket that has a glass bulb in it) and it still doesn't work. The main control card provides power to the heater 4 times every 24 hrs for 25 minutes or so to defrost the evaporator coils. If all items are working, you'll see water in the drip catch at the bottom inside of the freezer compartment. Better yet, pull the refer away from the wall for 24 hrs and check if water is gathering below the plastic drain on the right rear of the refer in the pan. The water drips into a pan and the fan for the condensor coil evaporates it. Go to the www.ge.com website and look in the service section to find the parts diagram for your refer. You can then get a part number to buy the parts you need from a local parts store or the Internet.
I just bought the thermostat a few minutes ago and will try that next. Heater was $37, thermostat was $15. Sensor is about $20 and the control card is $140 (you can find on line for $95). I'm going down that path. If none of this works, it'll be in the dump in a week.
I've learned on-line GE refers are bad news. The control cards can fail repeartedly, althoough mine has worked for over 4 years. But, I won't ever buy another one since refers should last at least 15 years in my book. After $200, it doesn't pay to throw more good money after bad. I'll keep you posted on my results.

My GE Model GSS201ETA, Serial # VL204167 does not dispense water. The ice maker works good. There is no water filter for this model.

I would start by making sure there is water going to it. If so it could possibly be the fill valve is bad. I would first volt out the vill valve supply plug just to make sure it is getting voltage when in use. If so I would recommend replacing the valve itself.

The GE Profile Harmony will not drain. It trys, but makes quite a rumbling noise.

Not an expert, but we had the same issue.....until our pump died completely. Limped along for a few years by unplugging the washer, and waiting about 20 minutes....then pump would work for awhile.

Now, our pump has died. With this quality issue, we are debating.....new pump, or new washer? Definitely will NOT buy a GE if we go that route! Good luck, it seems a LOT of people are experiencing this issue. GE should issue a recall!

GE Model GSH25JSRF SS is clicking non stop, the click comes from a small panel on the back right of the fridge. Started out that the water and ice dispenser didn't dispense. Then the clicking just came...

Is it still cooling? I had an issue where there was a clicking noise from the back panel and the fridge did not cool. Pulling off the panel the noise seemed to from a box on the circuit board. Turns out there was a problem with the controler board and after some research I found that the board was covered under a recall. GE ended up sending a guy out to replace the board at no charge. Pretty cool being that if was after the warranty had expired; but I guess it makes sence since there was a recall. Good luck.

The dryer has started to make a slight squeaking noise, but it is still drying

On a GE dryer the part that squeaks most is a WE3X75. Centerpost drum bearing. It is a simple repair but you must get into the machine. On a frigidaire model The plastic bearing that mounts in the rear sorta like a GE model. No other dryers that I can recall have the squeaks. The newer GE dryers are made very simular to the old reliable frigidaire models so you ought to hit it out the ball park with these 2 links.

Loud humming/no heating

Word has it that many of these models have a defect which causes the microwave energy to be reflected back to the magnetron, causing damage to the magnetron, and eventually damaging the high-voltage diode too. Also, the fuse or the magnetron theral cutout / thermostat can eventually blow, too. There is a replacement magnetron and stirrer kit available. I would definitely call the GE Answer Center at 800-626-2005 about this. It's not considered a recall, but a "campaign". They may pick up part of the cost. It's not cheap.
