Pull the glo- plugs individually and test for operation. Next test the glo-plug relay for correct operation as it will put on the light without power to the glo-plugs.

glow plugs are activated if look on the dash when you turn the ignition just before cranking and you should see a light that stays on for several seconds then goes out and then you should crank the engine ! sometimes when its really cold or the glow plugs are worn try turning the ignition on and off each time light goes out 2 or 3 times to get more heat on the plugs then start ! if this doesnt work then glow plus and system needs checking !

Glow plug light

I have an 83 300SD. Have you actually tested the glow plugs? You can remove and with a jump wire or even battery charger test to see if they are working. Attach negative to the body and + to the tip. Be careful they get HOT. If they are working (test them ALL because even if 1 or 2 are out it can cause hard start) make sure you have power to the plugs themselves. Maybe start there to make sure the relay is working. Test light while turning key on (may need a helper with this).

have you had the glow plugs checked or replaced? the engine light'wait to start is not a joke. it means the engine glow plugs need time to heat the cylinders to max. heat to fire the engine to start. if you use either or strting fluid to start the engine in cold weather,be careful, the motor will get addicted to the starting fluid. sounds like you've not waited on the wait to start light goes off before cranking the engine.replace the glow plugs 1st and then wait before the wait to start light goes off! it's a common mistake.however the cost of glow plug replacement will be a constant reminder to wait to start. glow plugs cost about $100.00 plus labor.been there myself!! you can start engine easily in a/m with either or regular starting fluid, but please take this to heart,it's easier to replace glow plugs, than engine you can use starting fluid by spraying into the air intake of motor once, twice, but from there on,you're on your own! thank you for choosing

You say that you checked the glow-plugs and that they are good.
How about power to the glow-plugs when cold.Is it getting 12v to the glow-plugs when you turn the key on for glow-plugs? You need to check that and if like I suspect it is not. check the temperature sensor--
Also if there is a short in any one of those glow- plugs it will not let the solenoid engerize the glow-plugs.

F250 Diesel will not start cold . Has power to glow plugs for short time ,but will not start 1986 modle.

Hello philkatkiele: My name is Roger and I will help you. First thing you need to check is the glow plugs. They will need tested individually. Un plug all 8 glow plugs. Take a test light and hook end to the positive battery cable. Touch opposite end of test light to the terminal end of the glow plug. The test light should light. Touch all 8 glow plugs. Ant that do not light are bad and will need replaced. If glow plugs are burnt out then the controller will flash wait light to early or very fast. The wait light should be on for approximately 10 seconds. If al glow plugs check ok then I would suspect the glow plug controller as the problem. Also if the temperature out side is below 40 degrees the truck should be plugged in. This will help to make the engine start easier. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer as this way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Difficult start

i have the same problem on my 306 i changed the battery and starting was much improved although i still need to change one of my glow plus i cannot get to * You have probably shorted out the +12v supply wire to the top of the glow plug. It is easily done and is easily corrected. Examine all of your wires to the glow plugs. At the end of each one should be a small ring crimp going over the threaded post and held on with either a 6mm or 8mm nut. These crimps should be only touching the threaded post, and not the glow plug body. They are very thin metal and easily bent to touch the body of the glow plug, hence not giving the heater element inside the juice to work. Good luck space cadet.
