If you are able...have someone do a compression check on the engine. Usually if a mower is loosing power and it is a twin cylinder engine, one of the headgaskets may be blown.

SOURCE: bog when trying to mow
you are cutting to much grass & it isn't kicking it out fast enough out of deck which will bog it down it might help if you clean out the bottom of the deck & also dont cut really low if grass is really tall also cutting wet grass will aslo cause the bogging if i can further help e-mail me wade at email@example.com

Check compression, should be over 90psi to start. And check spark. The loud pop I am going to assume came from the exhaust, which if you lost spark would cause excess gas to ignite. Causes of no spark, bad coil, or defective and or damaged safty swith.
