SOURCE: need a firmware update for
The current firmware update for the Pioneer BDP-05FD is available from Pioneer: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/Blu-ray-Disc-and-DVD/Elite-Blu-ray-Disc-Players/BDP-05FD . Click on the Firmware tab then download the .zip file (titled firmware upgrade). Extract the contents of the file.
Burn the .ISO file that is inside the .zip file to a new CD-R (or CD-RW) using your burning software. (If you have Win7, you can use the included burning software to do this. Just right-click on the iso in the file explorer and choose Burn Disc Image.)
Then check that the disc has the needed files and that the files are the correct size: DLfile.pkg 95.3Mbyte (99,942,480byte), .DLdiscidentifier.txt 93byte, DLdiscidentifier.txt 93byte (for v1.71)
Then put the upgrade disc into the player (work with the controls on the front of the player instead of the remote). Then wait until the disc ejects (do not power the unit off or unplug it). Remove the disc and then turn the unit back on. You should see various information show up on the screen that will indicate that the upgrade is in progress. If it doesn't give the prompts, then you may have an unreadable CD. Try burning a new disc at a different write speed (lower); try using a different burner/computer if problems persist.
I hope this helps.

Every Seagate drive requires a few firmware updates during its lifetime.
Seagate firmware must be up-to-date to ensure that the product will run reliably.
Changing the firmware on a Seagate product to a more updated version will improve the product's performance.
Check the Seagate website often for any update available for your drive.
The firmware can be changed with just a few clicks of your mouse on the Seagate Web page.
Click the "Start" button on the bottom-left corner of the screen.
In the window that pops up, click " My computer " or just "Computer."
Another window will show up with an icon for your hard drive.
Right-click the hard drive icon and press the "Properties" option.
This will tell you what model your hard drive is.
For example, your hard drive might be ST31500341AS.
Open your Web browser. Type in www.seagate.com and press "Enter" on the keyboard.
Wait for the webpage to load.
Enter the word "Firmware" and your model number in the search box on the upper right hand corner of the webpage and press "Enter" on the keyboard.
Using the example from Step 1, type in "Firmware ST31500341AS".
Click on the first link that is returned in the search results.
Locate the firmware update. Double-click the update.
Press the "Download Firmware Update Utility" link to start downloading.
Click yes on any pop-up boxes that you may see.
Open the new firmware file by double clicking the file that you downloaded in Complete the installation by accepting all of the default questions that are asked during the installation process.
