Question about Sub-Zero 650 / O Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a Sub Zero 650. The fan on top runs all the time. The temperature inside both Freezer and Fridge are fine and will respond to the changes I do to the settings. The fridge had been off for a move and I felt it too long for it ot get temp down (over night) where as the empty freezer droppped in hours. As I work by I check the fan by felling for the motion of air. A few times I have put my hand on hte small compressor and it has been warm toe the touch and running. Low on coolant? control board? starter relay fused? Any input would be great.

Hi,

If either compressor is running the fan is always on to cool both compressors. As they cycle it is possible the both compressor cycle at the same time and the fan turns off. But it is rare to see this happen. So yes the fans for the compressor does run at the time. I hope this helps, good luck

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

SOURCE: GE Fridge intermittent

I had the exact problem with my GSL25JFRFBS. It turned out to be a bad control board. The service technician that replaced the board said that the lights dimming on the on the ice/water dispenser is a direct indication of the control board being bad. This cost me $303.53 and my refridgerator is only a little over 2 years old. You can buy a new control board - WR55X10656 from GE online for a little over $157.00. From what I've found, this is an inherit issue with this model.

Is it normal for warm air to blow out of the fan at the top of a side by side sub zero. Its over 20 years old and we recently had the compressor replaced on the freezer side.

warm air will blow out from the condenser fan which is in the same area as the compressor.
There should be no warm air inside the freezer of fridge.

You might have a dirty condenser or possibly a freon leak. Check to see if the fans are running and lights are going off when the doors are closed. You didn't mention what the model number is, that might help.

I believe it's showing the actual temperature that it's currently inside the refrigerator, not the temperature it's set at. At least that's how my sub zero works. You may need to clean the coils to get it to cool better.

My 650/f sub-zero is not cooling in the refer but the freezer is working fine?

Subzero uses two compressors so the freezer is a separate system. The first thing to do is clean the condenser. You can find instructions on how in the owners manual or at subzero.com. They even have videos. If that doesn't take care of it you could have a bad condenser fan motor a sealed system issue or a temperature sensor issue. Also I have seen if you put something tall enough to push up on the light cover on the top shelf that can stop the evaporator fan at the top of the refrigerator section.

We have our Sub Zero model 650 frig set to 35 degrees, our usual temp, but suddenly it won't get lower than 50. Freezer seems fine.

Check for a fan motor in between the freezer and the fridge. Or you have a block of frost in there shutting off air flow.

Refrigerator not cooling properly

You may have a low freon condition in the fridge section. Look to see if you have an ice block building up on the rear wall towards the lower left side. If so, you are low on freon and the ost likely culprit is a leaking evaporater. The best way to tell if you are low on freon for sure is to take out all the shelves, remove the light cover, then the 2 screws holding the fan cover, and then remove the back wall. You wont be able to pull it all the way out cause the cold control is attached to it for the freezer and fridge so be careful. Turn the fridge control all the way up to 10 and wait till the compressor is running. you can tell if the compressor is running by pushing in the little switch on the top of the door frame and seeing if the fan runs(one switch is for lights, the other for fan) if it runs the compressor is on. anyway watch the coils and see if they develop frost all the way from top to bottom. If they dont you are low on freon and are ooking at about a $600 repair. if it does frost all the way you may have a bad cold control or a stalling fan motor up by the condensor on top. The best way to tell this is the next time the fridge feels warm, sheck the frame around the door seal and see if it is hot to the touch. If it is you almost surley have a bad condensor fan motor. Hope you can wade through all tis to find the answers. Good Luck!
