The notches on the bottom of the shaft keep slipping on the turning plate, the plate looks ok. but the notches on the bottom of the shaft looks worn. how can I remove and replace?

Steering gear slips


You have the steering shaft the pinion gear on the end of the shaft and the stationary gear at the bottom on the frame. Either the gears are worn out or the steering shaft has too much play in it causing the gears to slip.

MY dr 350 is very hard to shift from 2nd to 3rd....and from 4th to 5th clutch seems to be working fine but it left me with a 3 hr ridethat should have taken 45 min...any help would be great!!!!thnx


I hadthe same issue with my 92 DR 350N. After lubing everything to the point of excess, I pulled the crank case cover and it turned out that there was a tooth on the chutch release shaft was broken. It's the one that pokes through the case cover. The top has the clutch shift arm attached. I don't recommend doing this next statement, but it's what I did. I just removed the chunks, re-serviced the engine oil and gave it a go. It works much better, but it needs to be replaced. Also, if your clutch isn't disengaging properly, you hear the rpm slam the shaft into the notched pin poking out of your clutch plate basket, you can do a lot more damage. Open it up and see what you get. Also, check the shifting fork for abnormal or excessive wear. While you are there, inspect your clutch plates and the spacers between your clutch plates. Keep them all in order. If you have the plates out for an extended period of time, cut a clean 5qt 10W40 jug in half, put your plates and spacers in it and soak the plates in clean oil. That will keep them damage free and it keeps them moist. If it's an "all of a sudden" issue, look to the shaft. If it's gotten progressively worse over time, look at your transmission hard parts (like the fork). May as well rebuild the ****** if you find a worn part. Otherwise, it will wear the transmission abnormally and lead to an early failure of the transmission asa whole. It sucks, but it's better than crapping the whole assembly. Good luck!

John deere 68 riding mower steering column won't turn wheel assembly via arced toothed plate. Wheel assembly OK and greased. Some minor play when rotating steering column with steering wheel, but appears...


Just had same problem with my craftsmen. There is a very inadequate little nylon bushing supposed to keep that shaft stable. When worn out it allows that shaft to move and puts the gears in a bind. It is located on the end closest to arced gear where shaft hooks to drag link. Its a pain.

Bike want to move when clutch lever is pulled, if i adjust to lever to fix then clutch slips when under power.


you may have sticking clutch plates or the clutch drum may have notches worn in it and not letting the clutch plates slide as they should

Changing the belt


Always make sure your machine is unplugged from the outlet before replacing the belt.
Newer Oreck uprights have an access plate on the right hand side of the base (as you're looking at it from the front). Remove the one screw from the access plate and slide it forward. Snake the new belt around the brush roll pulley and then strrrrrrretch it back to the motor shaft. Replace the access plate.
If your model does not have an access plate; turn the machine upside down, Remove all screws. Lift the bottom plate off. Observe the position of the brush roll ends, One side of each end cap will have several notches cut into it,this is the 'new' side, the other side is smooth, this is the 'old' side. You can reposition the brush roll the the 'old' side if your bristles appear worn down.
With the brush roll still removed; place one end of the belt over the motor shaft first, place the other side of the belt around the brush roll pulley and stretch the brush roll forward until it is back in place.
Spin the brush roll by hand before replacing the cover to ensure the belt is not pinched.
Replace to cover.

Pulley wheel slips off and the agitation stops.


There should be square notch in the pulley and one in the shaft, this keeps the pulley on the shaft, if that shear pin or keeper is missing you will need to replace it most auto parts shops have shear pin material in stock and they are pretty cheap.

it might be your gears which are worn out and causing gear slips.. but there is high probability of your clutch plates getting spoilt.. the clutch plated work as disengaging the gears shaft to the main engine shaft.. sometimes when the clutch plates are very much use enough..,they stop working and cant retain to disengage the gears.. so first of all get your clutch checked well and then preoceed if it doesn't fix your problem.. heyii there is a shaft coming ut of the engine crank that connects to your transmission shaft which drives your gears and hence wheels.. so your 2nd gear must have worn out and for that reason the gear isn't working well.. get your gear box opened and check the gear.. Kirby g4 belt replacement


Facing vacuum,turn belt lifter knob counterclockwise till it stops.Lift headlight hood,and unlatch brushead,and remove.Looking thru the hole in back,turn belt lifter knob clockwise to release belt.Remove bottom plate,and bend one end of bracket to remove end of brush roll.Slip new belt on and replace brushroll back into bracket,and replace bottom rug plate.Looking thru hole in back,turn belt lifter knob until the hook inside picks up belt.Replace brushead,and again,turn belt lifter knob clockwise to drop belt onto shaft.
