Good Afternoon Mat, thank you for your post! Based on the symptoms you are describing, it sounds like the issue could possibly be related to a faulty electronic control or thermostat. I would suggest checking for heavy frost build up on the evaporator panel, which would indicate that the unit is not defrosting properly. At this point, please reach out to an expert technician to ensure the appropriate replacement part is ordered and is installed correctly to prevent future issues. I hope this information helps to some degree - thanks for your question, and please do not hesitate to reconnect.

SOURCE: cold freezer/warm refrigerator

Same problem with Frigidaire Gallery model#GLRT182SAW5 (dated 2002 on back of case)

Vents were blocked with ice. Vents (from top compartment to lower) located behind light. You can check by poking a chopstick up the (2) holes; be careful not to hit fan blades.

Solution:

- took freezer coil cover off in back; checked that defrost heater element was working (marked and rotated the timer in the hole next to light); checked that fan working. Found ice in the vents and defrost drip area. Got it out with hair dryer.

- cleaned compressor coils in back (check fan is rotating; also tweaked some of the compressor tubing bends to make them more smooth - read somewhere about a manufacturing defect ...); blew out drip tube from defroster while down there.

- Set the freezer control to WARM and the refrig control to COLD (THIS SHOULD IMPROVE AIR FLOW FROM TOP TO BOTTOM).

- Put thermometers in top and bottom. Checked that refrigerator cycles (not running continuously). Checked that cold air is coming down from (2) vents behind light.

OK: so far, so good. Lower compartment is 40 or under. Top is under 18.

CONCLUSION: Suspect marginal design. Had problems with another similar model where defroster ice doesn't drain correctly, pools and refreezes. Leading to blocked vents as well as blocked defroster drain and similar problem including dripping water from top to bottom and warm bottom.

MAYBE KEEPING THE FREEZER CONTROL AT WARM GETS AROUND THE PROBLEM?? ANYWAY, ITS WORKING FOR ME FOR NOW !!

SOURCE: frigidaire freezer cold, refrig in 50's.

Because the model FRT21P5A has a manual adjusting vent I believe your problem is either the defrost heater and defrost thermostat and or the cold control (thermostst) is not working correctly. When temperatures rise in the refrigerator side first that is a sign that the air flow from the freezer is restricted. You will need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel in back of freezer to confirm. If Iced over use a hair dryer to defrost and disconnect one wire on the defrost heater. Check the defrost heater with an ohm meter. You should get a reading. If defective and no reading you need to replace the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Refrigerator won't stay cold

where you found the block of ice there should have been a drain hole with a tube attached that runs to the evaporative pan at the bottom ... most likley is the pan at the bottom is dirty and the drin tube is plugged at this point the easy fix is to (1) clean the drain pan (2) remove the ice in the cold transfer shaft as you have done before (3) pour warm water into the drain hole as it is probally iced up and last take a can of air like you use for a computer key board with the straw attached place it in the drain hole and hold a wet rag around it and press the button once this is clear you should be home free hope this helps

Fridge not staying cool

Hi,

Thank you for contacting fixya.com.

Check the coils on the rear of the refrigerator and make sure they are clean and dust free. Also check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the evaporator fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils under the unit for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan under the unit to see if it is running. If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. Also check the freezer to ensure it isn't over loaded with food stuff, reason being air must flow freely threw out the entire refrigerator in order for the thermostat to work correctly.Defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both the doors open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

Hi

Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer (evaporator) fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils (under the unit) for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan (under the unit) to see if it is running.
These things usually require dismantling the freezer and other areas of the refrigerator to be checked.

You could defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both doors wide open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

Whirlpool Side By SIde Refrigerator Freezer stopped cooling

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of.

it is almost certainly a defrost problem. when fault has occured, remove freezer bzck panel and see if there is ice build-up. if so this confirms a defrost problem - possibly that the element is open circuit
