SOURCE: I have an Iomega MDHD500-UE external hard drive.

This does sound like a problem indeed.

if it still under warranty then I would suggest take it to where you bought it and try get a replacement.

IF its not under warranty then there are a few steps you can take to work out where the problem is.

Remove the drive from its enclosure (remember it is a hard drive and not just a lump of metal so treat it with respect)

Now insert that drive into a computer that has a suitable interface eg SATA or IDE. ans switch that computer on. if you can see the drive and use it to copy a small to then off the drive your drive is working fine and it was your enclosure that was at fault.

Buy a new one of the same interface and put the drive in there.

However if you could not use the drive... well you know the bad news.

External hard drives are just that. bangs knocks and drops can kill these devices pretty easily

You could get another drive and fit it in the enclosure.

Sorry to say, the drive is definitly not going to be able to be recovered by a non professional. Depending on how important the information is, you might want to consider calling a data recovery specialist to get wheatever information off of the drive that they can. A fall from that height will damage the read/write heads and possibly the actual drive platters. If you were planning on having it looked at by a professional, don't turn it on again, as this will result in more damage. Getting it fixed by a data recovery professional can cost several hundered to several thousand dollars.

Describe your external hard drive iomega MDHD500 Problem: I've just bought a MAC OSX computer which doesn't recognise my iomega hard drive (used on a PC) is there a way to fix this?

Are there any files on the disk-drive that you want to keep?
If so, connect it to a PC, and copy those files.

If not, connect it to the Mac, and allow the Mac to 'format' the drive, to initialize it for use on the Mac.

I presume you are trying to fix that unit. i suggest you remove the hard drive (if you already have it open and it isn't under warrenty). hook it up to your desktop computer as a spare drive and see if your computer recognizes it.

I have a Iomega MDHD500-UE that has worked fine for probably 18 months but in the last week my Apple NoteBook Pro is losing connection with it after about 5 to 10 minutes. I upgraded to Snow Leopold about...

I would very soon, purchase a hard drive and get all the files off this drive asap.
I had a drive that would work with symptoms like this and it eventually completely stopped. I heeded it's warnings and got all my file off and backed up onto another drive before it was too late. Plus drives ...big sized are really inexpensive right now...
Get a backup.... don't take a chance..

I have a iomega mdhd500-ue for about past ten months.when switched on it useually whirls into action but now it is just making a repeated clicking sound and it is not connecting to my laptop

I have a MDHD500-N Iomega external HD that had the same issue - clicking at startup and flashing power LED. I noticed that the supplied power transformer for the unit is 12V 1A and the sticker on the HD enclosure says 12V 2A. I hooked up the HD enclosure directly to a power supply - at boot up, the HD draws 2.5A, more than double what the provided power transformer can output. HD enclosure runs beautifully on an external PS.
