Question about Garden
That is normal if it has a rear dif/gearbox, they are ment to turn in opposite directions. Does your machine have a leaver to disengage the drive for recovery purposes.? This may have knocked the machine out of drive.

If your belt is connected to a gearbox then you need to go inside the gearbox and see what is holding up forward motion I think it could possibly be a broken tooth on a gear or something inside gearbox stopping your forward motion. Shot in the dark maybe but it's worth a try if your handy. Good luck!

SOURCE: I WAS RIDING MY MOWER, WHEN I DECIDED TO CUT SOME GRASS, I STOPPED THE MOWER, PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH, ENGAGED THE BLADES, THE BLADES STARTED MOVING, I THEN PUT THE MOWER IN FOWARD LET OFF THE CLUTCH AND
2 things, one, the belt jumped track, broke, or melted in place, 2, the hydrostatic ****** is out of oil, you didn't say if it was hydro or not. I doubt that the gear box has gone bad, but I would put more blame on a belt or pulley. Check it out. Hope this helps.
