Unable to access WD Passport 160GB USB Ext...

when i try and access my wd passport i get an error saying the drive is corrupted or unreadable. i have tried to restore the device using the wd fat32 format tool but get an error saying image cannot be written. formatting the device through disk management gives an error that the format could not be completed. and when the device is initially connected windows gives the scan and fix option which doesn't make any difference when run. i've just fun chkdsk /f on the disk and it says verifying files and folders then truncates a bunch of tmp files and a recycle bin that were somehow put on during my troubleshooting, don't know how or why since i can't access it. after truncating it says removing trailing folders from , it got to 75% then kicked me back to c:users... any ideas what else i might try?
