It sounds like it is misfiring or idle control valve is bad or somewhere in the intake is catching air but if you don't have check engine light on your cluster than it is a 90% chance it is the idle control valve.

SOURCE: car idles ok but cuts out when you try to drive it off

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

Engine cuts off when i turn on a/c or defrost at idle

Ac puts extra drag on the engine. Defroster also turns on the AC to remove moisture from windows. Sounds like your idle speed is too low. On some cars the computer compensates for the added drag by increasing engine idle. I would start with a tune up. If the check engine light is on you can get the codes read for free at a large chain auto parts store. This will tell you if components are bad

While pulling a small utility trailer with our 2008 Cadillac escalade we get off the freeway and start slowing down and suddenly, without warning the engine cuts out. When we try starting it again it...

1st check the spark plugs & wires
2nd check the alternator or starter
3nd check all sensors (crank shaft sensor, 02,)
finally the "brain" of the vehicle may be going out...

Runs rough after cutting on heat some times engine will die but when you cut the heat off it idle ok

Are you sure you don't mean defroster? With defroster on the A/C compressor runs and it will drag a engine down if defective. Disconnect the wire to the A/C compressor and see if it does it then.

My 1989 cadillac idiles low but once I turn the wheel it cuts off

remove and clean the IAC idle air control it is probably sticking and giving a low idle. or replace it if need be. it should idle at about 7-800 rpms, i think thats why it quits when you turn the wheel. it is putting more stress on the pump and the engine. check idle. Good-day !

Common problem with the 2000-2005 GM escalade and Denalli. You need to have the air intake or airflow sensor checked or replaced. worst scenario your air pump is leaking
