SOURCE: scotts 1642 riding mower take foot off brake engine shuts off

Sounds like the safety switch in the seat is bad or disconnected. Look under seat to see if anything is unplugged.

SOURCE: 4 years old, replaced original battery last year

Hi, W/D here.

Check the battery terminals for corrosion, and make sure that the connections are shiny, bright and tight. Follow the cables from the battery, and disconnect and clean each terminal as needed. Check the voltage in the battery as it sits. If you do not have a volt meter, any auto parts store can check it for you. They can also put a load test on it to determine if the battery is capable of taking a charge. It sounds like you had just enough battery to start the mower, but not enough to sustain it, but the problem may be elsewhere. You cannot move further until the battery is proven good, or replaced.
Provided that you have a good battery and all connections are secured and cleaned, with the key on, try to bypass the solenoid with a heavy insulated wire jumper between the large terminals. If the starter turns over, the solenoid or the start switch is bad. You can test the start switch for continuity with a meter, or a cheap automotive tester.
If all of the above checks out, the problem lies in the charging system.
Best regards, and please post back with your findings, --W/D--

Walker mower

Your ignition switch is bad. The contacts inside are not making good connection to send signal to starter solenoid to start engine. Now the run position contacts are bad causing the engine to shut off. If the engine cuts out on you again, wiggle the key in the ignition at the same time start the engine using your screw driver. If the engine starts back up again, wiggle the ignition to see if the engine hesitates and stalls out again. If so, replace ignition switch assembly.

26 hp 54 inch craftsman mower will not cramk over. sounds like turns over once than no more. replaced battery and same issue

try you and jump start the engine direct to the starter if you have a bad battery cable it will not carry the amps needed if still no luck remove the spark plugs to see how it cranks over if spins over fine you might have a bad compression release system on the cam shaft if fluid spits out the carb could be leaking into the engine

Engine will not crank on lt 1046. New battery. Seat switch is working. Seems like the clutch safety switch. Any ideas. thanks. Bill

both the seat and clutch safety switches must be working for the unit to start, ( or at least for checking purposes be Jumpered) but for your unit check this link for a breakdown of your machine (Lt1045 anyway )

Craftsman gt 5000 cranks wont start, fires with starer fluid sprayed into carb, wire on the bottom of bowl exposed and twisted, had removed carb to clean did not remove screws inside of carb same thing...

Aside from blocked jets the wires you speak of go to the anti-after-fire solenoid. Test with a 9v battery if the plunger moves up and down. If not replace or remove the plunger. it is meant to prevent backfires on hot shut down at full throttle. (shut it down at an idle)
If your machine is equipped with a fuel pump (feeds the carburetor) make sure it is pumping fuel.
I hope this helps. Feel free to respond with your engine and machine numbers for more info.
parts lookup for your machine can be found at shops like
