SOURCE: my zig zag stitch is distorted on the top side but

The bobbin tension sounds too loose. This will help if you have a bobbin case and not a drop in bobbin. Let me know if you have a drop in bobbin:
Setting bobbin case tension:
Put wound bobbin in bobbin case. Thread it in case. Hold the thread and carefully let go of the case only holding bobbin thread. The case should NOT move. Quickly let your hand drop 2-3 inches to let the bobbin case free fall for 2-3 inches, the bobbin case should move slightly then stop. It moves because it let’s a little thread off the bobbin. It should then stop .5"- 2" of thread should release. If so, your bobbin case tension is right. If it’s right then begin to look at your top thread tension. Always Always start with a properly adjusted bobbin case, then adjust your top tension accordingly.

SOURCE: Shirring fabric?

When putting your shirring elastic on the bobbin, don't thread the elastic through the bobbin holder, adjust the stitch length longer, and loosen the tension, other wise if you want to put it through the bobbin holder you have to loosen the tension screw on the bobbin holder, and then you have to adjust it back for ordinary sewing,

SOURCE: shark 384 - how can i get a straight stitch?

with the Shark Euro-Pro X machine, you need to bring the stitch width to zero it's the nob on top of the machine the manual states not to use it wider then 3 with the double needle cause it can break the needle. but either stitch selection "A" or "S" will give straight stitching with width at zero.

Can I use a knee lift with my Janome DXL603

In the Specifications section, this indicates a knee lift is not available:
Janome DXL 603 sewing machine computerised 60 pre programmed stitches...

For a knee lift, there would need to be an access hole at the lower right front to install a knee lift. Looks like there is not one on this machine.

My thread keeps bird nesting on the bottom of my fabric what am I doing wrong? What are the correct settings for a straight stitch?

Is your bobbin threaded correctly? You should be able to pull out the thread slowly while feeling it very slightly holding back. It should not pull out easily or quickly.
Could be something wrong with your tensions, try adjusting the upper tension first by starting at the middle setting and working gradually higher and then lower till you get a neat even stitch.

My runaway stitches on wrong side of fabric

Rule of thumb:
1.Too much thread on bottom then tighten top (tension).
2. Too much thread on top then loosen top (tension).
Just remember this works very well only if your bobbin is set properly.

Raw edge zig zag stitch bunching underneath

When zig zagging over a raw edge, the tension on the thread will pull in the fabric, especially in lightweight cottons or even lighter organza. Its not the best edging method for very light weight fabrics. You can try using a smaller zig zag, loosening off the top tension a little bit. Or if your machine has it, use the triple zig zag or serpentine stitch, where the needle goes through the fabric three times to make up each zig stitch, this stitch is better for edging most fabrics and is my preferred stitch.

What are the settings for regular sewing, I do not have a manual. It has 3 knobs on the front and 1 on top? This might have something to do with my problems.

The three front dials are as follows....left to right-Stitch width, type of stitch, and stitch length. The dial on the top adjust the top tension.

For straight stitch you want 0 stitch width, straight stitch, 3 for stitch length.

For zig zag you want turn your stitch width to how wide you want the zig zag, choose zig zag stitch, and choose how close you want the stitches to be on the stitch length dial. Practice on a piece of fabric. Usually for zig zag you will want to loosen your top tension a little bit.
