Question about Hayward Pool & Spa

Hayward 1hp super pump-self priming -rebuilt won't run

I just replaced the shaft seals in my pump. reinstalled impeller and all covers. Primed pump and started it up--ran for 30 sec then popped GFI. reset-turned on and each time now as soon as pump starts GFI pops. Test ran pump on bench and had no issues then. Could I have tighten impeller to much, or installed something incorrectly. Thought I had put together as it was taken apart. Thanks for any help!!

SOURCE: HAYWARD SUPER PUMP 1HP. ABOUT

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

Start with the capacitor if one is present. Use a digital multi-meter (DMM), preferably with a capacitor setting, or an analog meter set for Ohms. With an analog, you should see the needle deflect as if testing a closed circuit then it will slowly drop to 0 if the capacitor is good. If it doesn't move or moves and stays to the side showing a closed circuit the capacitor is bad. If you notice a burn hole near the terminals on the end of the capacitor do not bother to test it. If you do not have access to a meter you can try grounding the posts together with a screwdriver to see if they arc although it is not a very reliable test method. Be sure you are holding on to an insulated handle for the tool you use to short the terminals together or you can get a good poke.

Next check the internal stationary start switch for continuity thru the contacts. Bent or burned up points and arms can cause a startup failure...you may need a new part if yours is more than bent out of position.

Finally check the winding for grounds and shorts...if you find any it is most likely time for a new motor.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

IT TURNS OFF TO THE LEFT, YOU NEED A 7/16 OR A 11 mm WRENCH TO HOLD THE ROTOR AT THE BACK OF THE MOTOR.. LOOK FOR THE NOTCH IN THE SHAFT UNDER THE SYNTRIFICAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY , BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK ANYTHING ON THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. REPLACE THE SEAL ! THERE IS A GUY SELLING SHAFT SEAL HAYWARD SUPER PUMP MOTOR REPAIR KIT & how to

I have a 1 hp hayward super pump. the model # of the motor is C48K2n143B1. I need to replace the motor only. is it a big deal?

If you've never done it before, it can be a bid deal. You will need to get the exact replacement motor (1hp square flange), a shaft seal, impeller wrench, and be prepared to replace o-rings and rewire the new motor. If you're not comfortable dealing with electrical/mechanical, you're better off getting a service tech to help you out.

Pump motor will not turn over without manual priming?

All pumps need to be primed. The Self-Priming pumps still require water in the basket.
If water is not staying in the plumbing system when it is turned off, then you have a leak in one of the o-rings or the shaft seal.

Water coming out down by motor , pump is pumping but leaking. how do you get impeller off

sounds like a shaft seal leak..... cut power to pump ... unbolt the motor at the seal plate and pull motor from pump... take electrical cover off back of pump and hold the shaft at the middle (may have to do some digging to find it) of the back of the pump... now youll be able to remove the impeller by spinning it counter clockwise...
make sure you dont go cheap on the seals... and make certain to replace all seals on pump
(diffuser oring, housing gasket, shaft seals, and lid gasket

Leak between seal plate and pump/strainer housing

The pump seal is leaking and needs replacing and requires removing four 3/8 bolts (9/16) wrench and removing the motor then the diffuser to get to the impeller and seal . A 7/16 wrench holds the rear motor shaft behind the springs and impeller spins off to reveal the seal which has two parts one on the impeller with a spring and one in the seal plate is white ceramic/ porcelan whatever they use. Part number is an SPX1600KA on super pumps and 1500KA wassome above grounds. When replacing do not touch the mating white and black surfaces with your fingers.

How do you change a pump seal on a hayward 1hp pool pump

The seal is located behind the impeller. Once you remove the impeller it is fairly obvious how to replace it. Basically, unscrew everything, replace it and put it back together again. There is a decent diagram on page 11 of the Hayward owners manual found here if you need it. http://www.haywardnet.com/products/Manuals/pdfs/Manual113.pdf
