Gas oven not staying off

New house for me, not sure how old the range is. A few weeks ago, the oven would light itself after the dial was turned to the off position. It wouldn't go over 100F, and playing with the knob a little would get it to stay off. Now, it's getting worse. It's heating up to over 200F, and I can't do anything to make it stay off. Before and other than this issue, the oven seems to work fine. Also, no problems with the stove. Any ideas what the issue is and how to fix it? Also, with this issue, would it be dangerous to unplug the range? Would this stop the gas flow or would it allow gas to flow through without being burned off?

SOURCE: oven quit working

Hi. this is common in many old gas range ovens. There is a set of coils that are attached to the gas valve assembly. These coils , when activated and operational, open and close the main and secondary valves in this unit. They are controlled by the main ERC(clock/oven control board). I recommend checking these coils and there respective wiring harnesses. if the clips and wires are worn and corroded, simply replace the entire wire harness.

Now, if the wiring harness and wires that are connected to the coils look good and there are no signs of corrosion on the wires and connector clips, this will confirm that the coils have failed and you will need to replace them.

You can also preform an additional test with a multimeter. simply connect your multimeter or voltage meter to both terminal posts located on the coils. once your meter is connected, start the oven cycle. you should register some sort of current during this test at this time. if the current is sufficient and the coils do not initiated the valve action, this will confirm coil failure. if the meter dosen't register a current during oven operation, this will confirm ERC(control) failure. you will have to replace the Oven control board in this case.

The Most common issue in this situation will most defiantly be the coil assembly and not the control.

Please rate and god bless:)

If this is happening on more than one burner the command module may be bad, small cicuit board inside control panel. With power disconnected easy replacement. check wiring to each burner control 1st by removing control panel cover. Be careful to remove small screws on either side of panel between panel & burner.

SOURCE: I have a Kenmore Elite Gas Range. #790 series.

Possibly a malfunctioning electric gas valve. The electronics may be sending the message to open that valve, however it could be stuck, clogged or, worse, the electric servo that manipulates it could be fried (no pun intended).
Do you have your exact model #? {Not serial} I can research where to troubleshoot a valve problem or an electronics issue.

Tried to set timer, now ovens will not work

I must assume this is an older oven with the mechanical timer turn knobs. This problem is not a new one; you have to align the times of the on and off dials to the same time, then you will feel one of the dials will slightly indent itself. It is this indent position that actually switches the oven on. As for using and setting the timer to actually start and stop the oven, it is a difficult thing to explain and nobody ever remembers the method for the next time around. Better to get it back to the indent position and leave it alone. Goodluck, Macgivor

Electric oven and stovetop do not work, clock and oven light do.

Sounds like you are only getting 120 volts instead of 240 volts. Either a house electical problem or wiring in range. First go to your breaker and turn it off and on three times and give it a little extra push each time you flip it. ( You can actually flip a breaker off and on without resetting a blown breaker if you doni't push it all the way off and all the way on. If the breaker throws itself off do not reset it. You have an elecrical short in your house or range. If resetting the breaker does not work then you need to test for 240 volts coming into the range. We don't recommend you do any electical testing unless you know what you are doing with electicity. If you have 240 volts going to the range then unplug your range and remove the backing panel off the back of the range. Look for burned wiring or terminal blocks. If there is nothing obvious then you need to know how to read a wiring schematic and use a electical tester to go any farther. Let me know if this helps. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

I need an owner manuel for Caloric Range Model # EST 345 I can'g figure out how to run the self cleaning oven cycle.

you might try the following, although it is the instructions for an old model, it may be relevant;

"The actual self-cleaning process is initiated by a simple 5 step procedure: 1. Set the range clock to time of day. Note: on models not equipped with an automatic oven timer, the self-cleaning cycle is preprogrammed for a 21/2 hour cycle. Use Steps 3, 4 and 5 only. 2.Establish the length of cleaning time by:
A. Setting the start time. Press and turn the start dial of the automatic oven timer clockwise to the desired starting time. B. Set the stop time. Press and turn the stop dial of the automatic oven timer clockwise to the desired stop time. Max time is 3 hours miniumum 1/12 hours. 3. Set the oven selector dial on the control panel to "Clean" 4. Set the temperature control dial to "off". If you temperature control dial has a "Clean" position, then set the dial to "Clean" instead of "Off". 5. Remove oven racks, broiler pan and broiler grid from lower oven. Close and lock the oven door by moving the latch lever as far right as it will go - into the locked position. If the lever is accidently dislodged restore it to the locked position. Otherwise, the self-cleaning process will not take place. Shortly after the cleaning cycle has begun, the oven temperatur reaches a degree in excess of the normal broiling temperature. The red "Clean" light will come on and the clean cycle will start. In a few minutes the door lock lever, which you have placed in the locked position, will automatically be secured to prevent the oven door from beging opened during the cleaning cycle. This latch remains locked until the clean cycle is complete and the oven temperature reduces to normal baking and broiling temperaturs. NOTE: Prior to self cleaning cycle operation, the oven and surface lights must be turned offed. The upper oven can be used."

Oven will not turn off on older Kenmore range

Your oven thermostat has gone faulty. You need to unplug power from the wall. Remove panel that allows access to oven thermostat, Remove knob and see what type of retaining method it has to secure it to the oven. (Does it have a nut or does it have 2 screws holding itself in position.?). How thick is the dial shaft?(5 or6 or 7 mm.thick). With that information, look now at the body of the thermostat. It should have a number sequence in the form of a sticker on it. Write it down. Phone the spares suppliers and quote them the stove model number with the other relevant items you wrote down to ensure the correct thermostat. Note, never remove wires until you are ready to transfer them one at a time from one thermostat to the other until transfer is complete. Reassemble completely and check.

Turn oven on and smell gas will not light

I had the same problem when I bought a house with a gas range. If you wait ten seconds or more there is a unit that heats up and ignites the range instead of a pilot. You will hear a click every few seconds then while it ignites the stove. I was afraid to wait because I smelled the gas. But after paying someone $100 for a service call that is what happened.

It is electrical and in the back of my stove there is a cord that goes in the wall. make sure it is plugged in. It also affects the burners however they have a light option on the dial, the oven does not.

Hope that helps.
