Imperial 66 typewriter

As you type on my Imperial 66 typewriter the platen does not move along. Any ideas on how to fix this? Also any suggestions on how best to take apart and clean it would be very welcome!

I might add: when I say 'doesn't move along' I mean that the platen moves from side to side (when pushed by hand) but doesn't move at all when I type.

SOURCE: Need to clean the platen

IF you can't get the platen roller out, then what you can do is get a cleaner called " GOO GONE". Take a rag or paper towel, and pour some of the goo gone on the rag where the labels are located. IMPORTANT PART: You want enough Goo Gone on the rag so you can saturate the label. I have even CAREFULLY poured some Goo Gone right from the container onto the label.
Just don't go crazy with the Goo Gone.... You do not want to pour sooooo much onto the platen roller where it drips down it the frame of the machine and possibly onto the main board.
REMEMBER.... Just enough to saturate the label.

After the label is saturated.... WAIT AT LEAST 3 minutes. I usually wait closer to 5 minutes, and then you will notice that the label can be easily pulled away from the platen.
After all of the labels are removed, go over the entire platen with the Rag with Goo gone, and then go over it again with a clean dry rag.

I hope this works for you as well as it has worked for my customers.
Good luck.
Mac =)

SOURCE: platen

I believe that oly's platen knobs are threaded into the platen. Grip the platen and unscrew the knob. This can require a bit of force if it has been together for a long time.

There might be a setting for how many lines it moves when the carriage gets to the end. It is mechanical so you'll see it!

When typing the letters pile up on each other

Most likely it needs lubrication. WD40 is a wonderful thing. Make sure that you put rags under the typewriter to catch the mess. As you press keys and the space bar, spray under the platen as it moves. You want to lube the escapement and the rails. When finished, use denatured alcohol to clean the platen and rollers. (But try really hard NOT to get WD40 on the rollers or the platen. The rollers can be hard to get to). DO NOT do this if this is an electric. They have a rolling platen under the typewriter to provide movement to the keys, etc. If the roller gets oil on it, it will stop working! You can keep cleaning the roller, but as the oil keeps dripping on the roller, all the movements will slip. Eventually you might get it clean, but it is a pain.

Will only type half a letter on the paper

Depending on typewriter model some have a what we call abc lever that moves platen forward or back, IBM selectric has this, Other than that carrige may not be held in place right or the platen (RUBBER ROLLER) may be out of place.

I am trying to type on labels but I cannot get the typewriter to grab the paper, so I keep typing on top of the same letters. When I hit return, the paper moves with the typing part.

If it works on paper Then take a pice of 150 grit sandpaper and remove the glaze on the platen. After you will have to wipe the platen to get the black dust off.

The platen does not turn to advance the paper to the next line when typing so each line is just typing over the next.

Remove the platen by squeexing the black plastic retainers at both ends of the platen and lifting it out. Look for debris under the platen, press paper up key and see if the gear on the left end is moving, if it is the gear on the platen may be broken (new platen) or if someone has been in here check to be sure the paper tray is properly installed (rounded edge to the rear).

Is your typewriter made by Royal or Brother? I think your question was mis-posted under Brother as opposed to Royal. IF your machine is a Royal, Brother will NOT be able to help you. THIS GOES FOR EITHER MANUFACTURER...Have you inspected the platen drive gear? Is it cracked, missing teeth or otherwise damaged? If not look on both sides of the typewriter for the drive motor. Look to see if the gear mates with the motor.
