Determine whether or not the engine is locked up by removing the plastic outer shell including the pull cable. The cable reel once dis-engaged from the crankshaft should freely pull out and retract on its own. If the cable reel is still hard to pull, you can replace the reel. Otherwise the engine is binding probably cheaper to replace the whole unit than attempting repair.

How do I get my reel to keep from letting the line out while I'm holding down the cast button?

Hold the line with your index finger and against the rod itself. Then cast and release your hold

Hi. My car is a 1999 Ford Focus. I have a broken handbrake cable right by the rear drum(short piece). I have got the connecter off half way using an old pair of circlip pliers, but they arnt strong enough...

Yes, The part that reels in the cable when you use the handbrake can be taken loose and this will give you slack in the assembly at the rear end of the cable. Also, some of the reels have a release tab built into them; NOT using fingers you would put pressure against the release tab and it would move the tab off of the teeth on the reel. Then the reel would unwind creating slack.

Now some may frown at this statement, "You can pull the cable by hand from under the drivers door floorboard and temporarily hold it in place with Visegrips". This can damage the cable and cause it to bind passing through the fixture. If you wrap cloth or leather around the cable before clamping it, the visegrips will damage it less or not at all.

I hope my solution is very helpful to you.

The horn on my 02 Odyssey will not blow. I've checked the fuse and relay but they were both good. I believe the horn ring or the contact may be broken. How do you get the steering wheel off?

Before you pull the wheel (which involves removing the air bag unit) you can test the horn switch at its connector with the cable reel (newfangled horn ring). First remove the dashboard lower cover under the steering column. Remove the steering column upper and lower covers. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness connector (4 pins) from the cable reel. Check for continuity between the cable reel no.2 terminal (light green/blue stripe wire) and body ground in each horn switch position. There should be continuity when horn is pushed and no continuity when horn is released. If one or both continuity checks fail, then you'll have to remove the airbag and change out the cable reel.

I have a 2005 honda crv, after changing the steering rack the cruise control is not working

There is a cable reel (clock spring) in the steering column. If it was not centered when you put in the rack than it probably broke.... Is the SRS light on too? This cable reel allows electrical connection to the air bag and the cruise control switch (mounted to the steering wheel), so you can turn the wheel. Its operating range is two and a half turns from center in both direction. When you disconnect the steering coupler from the rack the steering wheel moves, now the cable reel is not centered. If you put it back on in this position and turn the steering wheel fully to one side the cable reel breaks. That could be what happened, however the cable reel is very expensive so make sure that's it before replacing. I recommend performing an input test on the cruise control unit to confirm.

The drag is set by turning the knob which secures the spool to the reel.

To cast, hold the line against the rod with index finger on right hand. Then flip the bail open which frees the line to come off the spool. The bail, when it gets to a certain point will lock open. When casting, release your finger on the line when the rod gets to 11 o'clock.

Flip the bail back by turning the reel handle -- the bail will pop back over the reel -- then you're ready to reel it in.

The bail is the wire-like device on the top of the reel.

There is probably a button/switch for turning anti-reverse on & off -- when on, this keeps the reel from turning backwards when force is applied to the line.

I think those are the highlights.

Flashing code c:31:23 palyer will start but cuts off. rewind will start but cuts off.

This is a capstan code you are getting. It just means the capstan motor which pulls the tape via a toothes belt and reel table ,has stoped when it shouldn't. Lots of things can cause this. I start by cleaning and dring the tape path then check reel torque and see if anything is binding the capstan. I have also seen a flex cable open up on these ls chassis that bring up this code.
