you have to remove the trim inside the door. you have to carefully pry the inner trim and kind of twist it as you remove it so you don't break it.
if there is enough of the handle left where the screw goes in(I'm assuming that's where it broke) sometimes you can drill into it a little and put a longer screw on. otherwise you need to buy a new handle.

The in side door panel ( at total pain) must come off

If the damage to the bottom is not too bad.
On mine I took the cover for the handle loose from the bottom ( it pops off, but be careful).
and put screws at the bottom

The inside of the door has a Black Plastic frame about 1 inch wide. This frame can be removed by placing a thin screwdriver between it and the outer door frame and gently (very gently) prying it away from the door. It takes a little wiggling of the frame but it will unlock. On each end of the handle is a philips head screw that holds the handle to the door.

Same goes for me. I can get most of the trim off but not the area near the hinge. ! It will cost $100 for GE to come out, and I already own the new handle. Come on GE tell us the secret.
