Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 1500 Typewriter

1 Answer

Characters fill in intermittently.

Characters fill in of have ink smear to the right of the character. Tried new type wheel, ribbon to no avail. Looks like the ribbon might be advancing at the same time as the hammer strikes the print wheel, dragging the ribbon across the paper. Happens with letters a, i, j more than any others.

Re: Characters fill in intermittently.

This is a common problem with old supplies stored in a humid environment. Try leaving ribbon in an air conditioned environment for a couple of days to see if it helps. Otherwise buy a new sealed ribbon to try. Also push the hammer buy hand and see if it moves in and out freely and quickly. If not, the hammer needs some lubricant and or adjusting.

If it is moving as the hammer is struck, then it's one of two things. Either the hammer is moving too slowly, or the ribbon is moving too quickly. Since this is a rather old machine, it seems more likely things would slow down than speed up. I'd check the hammer solenoid. See if it's dirty, or needs lubricated. I wish I could give you more advice on this, but I am not familiar with this specific model, and was unable to find any kind of service manual, or troubleshooting information for it.

Check that the hammer is striking the letters squarely, that the daisy wheel is firmly located in its holder , Check too that the patten has not moved up in its location. Check that the ribbon can still transfer a deposit across its entire width. (Look back at a used part of the ribbon to see the strike pattern).

The other problem may be the ribbon may have a bind in it or be out of ribbon. There is a wheel or hole on the ribbon to mover to tightened it up. try that

New ribbon and can't get it to type

did you make sure that the end pieces are engaged into the brackets in the part facing you. Also if the correction tape is not loaded onto the ribbon prior to installing it, it will do that too.

Hope this helps, Denise

Characters do not print.

The print solenoid plunger has a plastic cap on the end of the plunger it is probably broken. They are available but you need a bit of mechanical ability to install.

Make sure that the ribbon is moving. If characters are piling up in the same spot on the ribbon you will get this problem. Easiest fix is to replace the ribbon. Many brand new ribbons can have a problem. If this dosent solve the problem it may be a mechanical problem with the mechanism that drives the ribbon, requiring a technician to repair.
