knjjjr what you have is a defective (or in this case) worn out lower wash arm support. No the shaft shouldn't come out. It will need to be replaced. However remember this dw is over 20 years old.

That will only happen if the bottom basket is severely distorted or if the design of plates you're using means that they project below the bottom of the basket.
The first problem is fixed by straightening the basket or replacing it; the second one can only be fixed by experimenting with different ways of loading the plates to avoid them projecting down through the basket or by using different plates.
