Sounds typical of a broken key on the flywheel which allows the timing to fire at the wrong time. Flywheel on a mower is under the pull start mechanism housing. Caused by hitting something solid with the blade and the momentum of the engine shaft cracks or shears the metal key part. Remove the flywheel carefully and put in a new key.

Craftsman LT1000 mower has muffled backfire. Mower starts fine, runs fine. At times it issues a muffled backfire- not loud at all. The backfiring continues for several moments and then disappears.

Yes, gas has a portion of ethanol in it and that contains water. You need to a stabilizer in it at the end of the summer. Drain it out and use fresh gas, add stabilizer to that as well.

Does the blade need to be on for my 6.5hp self propelled toro mower to start? It keeps backfiring and the blade key is striped.

I am not familiar with this model. However, just about all lawn mower engines rely on the blade to act as a flywheel, a very important factor in engine operation.

I hope this helps you ...

Unable to restart Toro lawn mower after it backfired and stopped.

Did you hit something? Sounds to me like a flywheel key sheared off or a major internal part broke. My thoughts are you will need to take this to a repair shop or individual that can comfortably tear into the engine.

Backfiring engine on start up

Could be anything. An air leak between carb and motor, wrong jet settings(air fuel mixture), choke adjustment, water in gas, and more.
