SOURCE: toro lx425 rider mower wont start

If a small engine wont start its usually one of two problems, its not getting gas, or its not getting spark. easy way to find out if its getting a spark is to remove the plug, put it back back in the connector and just let it hang down while you try to start it. you should see a bright blue spark, if you dont try changing the spark plug. if its getting a spark come back on this site and i'll help you trouble shoot it.

A fully charged battery should read a minimum of 12.65, if it does not and connections and grounds are dirty then that's your problem. Start with a none fully charged battery. If you can bypass the solenoid and start it then the culprit is the solenoid. Good luck. donnyb60

I asked a question about a toro riding mower but it was placed in the cars and trucks catagory

Depends if it is the starter solenoid that is clicking or the fuel solenoid. If it the starter and clicks try jumping the two large posts with a screwdriver that you don't mind damaging. If the starter now turns then it is the solenoid if not then it is starter. If the starter doesn't click then it can be a safety or ignition switch problem.

What possible reasons would toro 16 44 hxl not start.

If you jumper across the two main solenoid terminals and it starts then replace the solenoid; otherwise it could be the starter.

Toro timecutter won't turn over with key

Sounds like the solenoid is bad. Most solenoids connect positive + from the battery. One side will read 12 volts (with the black wire of a test meter or test light. (The side connected to the battery). Energize the solenoid (loud click) And with the key held, check the other side for voltage. No voltage, bad solenoid. Be careful when you buy a replacement. Many look the same but do different things.

Toro lx 420 wont start, sounds like starter wont engage jst a clicking sound. I put a new battery and solenoid in and still the same

starter motor i would suspect. try hitting it with a hammer to jar it into life. im sure its the starter motor.you could try running a positive from the battery to the positive on the starter motor to see if it turns if it does not replace srtmotor

Engine ground wire

A click is a good sign
I'd touch a car jump lead direct from battery +ve to main terminal on starter motor. Just flash on for 2 seconds - It will spark a bit but it should turn the starter motor - regardless of key / solenoid circuitry.
If YES then trace the heavy wiring from batterry to starter via the solenoid and check for tight / non-corroded conections.
If NO then you have a either a faulty/flat battery or a starter motor problem (likely worn brushes - which are cheap to replace)
I doubt you have a ground lead off - because it wouldn't click if that was off!

HOW DO I TELL IF ITIS SOLENOID OR STRATER BAD ON MY SEAR LAWN TRACTOR?

you can check the starter by removing it and using jump cables to the body- and starter terminal to +. still there are the saftey switches in the picture when on the tractor. if you have a bad switch then it also wont start.
