Question about Sharp AL-1451 Laser Printer

Sharp Printer Problem

The Printer shuts down with scanner carriage only having moved about an 1" to the right from the home position. It makes a grinding sound, but I have lifted the glass and the carriage is free. The display alternatively blinks L-4. I have wiped down all mirrors and scanner bar codes that seem to be involved with the carriage. Is there some suggestions you can provide? thegallis@earthlink.net

If subcode is 00 then network connection is problem, if 02, then its not talking to the network scanner tool on the computer. Might be an IP address problem, where the address in the webpage of copier is wrong for the PC.

Can't get WF-3520 cartridge holder box from far right position so I can remove & replace an ink cartridge

To force cartridge removal do the following
Shut down the printer (if it is powered on)
Now turn the printer on
When you see that the carriage starts to move instantly unplug the printer power cable
Now you can move the carriage freely by hand!
Move it in the cartridge change position and change the cartridge you want to change

Do it just if the printer has a defective cartridge and the carriage won't go to the cartridge change position :)
Hope you found it useful!

The Ink carriage in my Epson Printer won't realign from home position to change cartridge, how do I fix this?

If the carriage doesn't move at all, the latch may have gotten stuck. If you unplug the printer, wait a few seconds, plug it in and power on, it should move the carriage back and forth. If it moves at all, quickly unplug it, while it is unlocked.

Now, you can clean around the parked position, and lube the travel shaft (sewing machine oil is good. Any similar light oil is ok).

If this doesn't help, check that the optical tape behind the carriage is clean, there are sensors to measure carriage position, and if the tape gets dirty, they won't work right. Do not use solvents there, you can remove the marks and make your printer into a paper weight.

Red warning lights remain on.....

Ink and paper light on : head carriage error/general error. Head can't move extremely to right : head carriage blocked or CR motor error. Turn of printer, unlock head carriage lock. Move head left and back to right (to parking position). Is it move freely?

Scanner won't scan

L3-00 means the scanner unit/carriage is locked up/not moving. If its just been moved then something could have been knocked slightly out of place.
You will need to remove the main glass and see if you can move the unit by hand - perhaps freeing up the bind. make sure there is nothing obstructing the free movement of the unit. check for loose cables/wires that could get in the way.. make sure the main drive wire is still correctly routed/attached. Make sure the the rail the unit runs on is lightly lubricated. Make sure the unit is sitting square with the rails it runs on. Make sure there is not a locking mechanism (used while moving the copier) that has been engaged. The drive motor that runs the pull cable could be locked up/not rotating.
That covers about all the basics.
Hope this will help.

System error L1-00

the L1-00 indicate the scanner carriage is not moving. Something is stopping it. Open the document feeder and turn the copier on while watching the scan carriage (beneath the main glass) - does it move or try to move ? does it make a noise?
If it seems to be moving freely for a bit and then stop - is it going back to its "home" position (starting point). Remove the main glass and then move the scan carriage by hand (with the copier turned off) .. does the carriage move ok? check for a loose carriage drive wire or debris or something broken. Make sure the carriage locking screw is not holding it. Then turn the copier back on and see if the carriage makes an attempt to move back to its starting point. if everything seems to be moving ok then the problem could ly with the "home position" sensor. It could also possibly be a bad drive motor.

I have an error code of L3-00 on my Sharp AR 168D. Can you help.

L3-00 indicates scan carriage motor trouble. The carriage with all the mirors on it is not moving at all (scanning) or is not moving at the required speed so it does not reach its "home" position. If restarting the copier does resolve the issue....
A few things to check... When you turn copier on does carriage move at all? if not then the motor could be bound up (not turning) - also make sure the cables pulling the carriage are properly wound. remove the main glass and make sure there are no obstructions in the way of the carriage (a loose cable maybe or dirt) can you move the cable by hand freely? if the motor locks up it could be really hard to move the carriage.
The carriage seems to be moving freely (by hand and when you turn the copier on) it could possibly be the "home position" sensor that is faulty and not reading the correct position of the carriage.
You can the copier in test mode to check either the motor or sensor. press the following keys one after the other # * C * then press start/enter , press 1 and start/enter again, sub code 1 will test the motor and sub code 2 will test the sensor.
So it could be a bad motor or sensor or the MCU board that drives the motor (or may just need a good cleaning).
Good Luck.

Hardware error:0502

1. Ink cartridges lids are open which is not allowing cartridges to move freely.
2. Ink cartridges carriage will not move from its original position(left) when front cover is opened
3. Encoder strip is Dirty.
4. Encoder strip is Out of position.

Solution:
1. Open the front cover and check if ink cartridges lids are properly snapped in.

2. Turn the printer off and pull out the power cable from power socket, open the front cover and manually center the ink cartridges carriage.
Clean the metallic rod inside the printer using WD40 or Kleenex from Left corner to right corner properly.

3. Cleaning the encoder strip:
a. printer should be off and disconnected from power.
b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.

4. Repositioning the Encoder strip.
a. Remove the power cord from the printer.
b. Open the front cover.
c. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
d. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
e. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
f. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
g. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
h. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
i. Re-connect the power cord to the printer and try again to print.
