Question about Acer (91.AB264.016) Internal 24x CD-ROM Drive
I have several HP / Compaq nc2400 ultra small laptops. About two weeks ago I took one off the shelf and inserted a XP Pro 32Bit CD and it launched and installed the software and I went on to update all of the drivers. Later I decided to add another program using a CD and the Optical Drive (DVD/RW) will not spin up to full speed, it just kind of surges for a few times and then quits trying. I have tried other CD's so that is not the problem. At the time I just I had a bad Optical so I went to the next nc2400 and it did the same thing. So, I thought two bad Optical drives? It turns out that this problem is consistent over several of these that I have done and I cannot figure out why. It sees the drive within Windows, and it allows you to attempt to boot from it at start up, it just won't spin fast enought to read. Has anyone run into this before? Why do they all run fine during the install of the OS, even as the OS restarts the computer during setup, but then it quits after windows is installed? Thank you
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Before you did the install did you make sure that you set your CMOS setting to check for a cd disk first before booting straight to the hard drive? When you do an install, you must make sure that the computer knows to look for a bootable disk otherwise it will look for an operating system to boot to first. If this is the problem, after you have installed your operating system you must go back and reset your CMOS settings to look for a hard drive or operating system. Hope this help and if it doesn't let me know for further assistance.

With respect to SATA drives. All are master drives. As you mentioned if there is a fight between drives the trouble can be settled in the bios. I gather the WD160GB drive holds windows on it & the WD is connected to SATA 1 port. Enter you're bios & go to the Boot section. Open you're manual to section 2.6 boot menu page 2-32. Make sure you're WD is the only hard disk drive listed. After you add the Blu-Ray (To SATA 2 port), (its pin setting should be set as master. Than go back to the boot menu & make sure the Blu-Ray drive is listed under the WD drive.
Keep in mind for the future that if you want to boot to the Blu-Ray drive you'll need to press the F8 key at boot up. Windows select boot device window will open & high-light the Blu-Ray & press enter so the Blu-Ray will boot. Windows should no longer stall. If this does not work try switching the pin on the blu-ray to slave. (I'm not sure there is even a pin setting on the blu-ray drive. Never the less the bios boot order is the boss.

SOURCE: No CD /DVD Drive Icon
I checked the specifications on the Acer 9410Z, and verified that it ships with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.
This is actually a very common problem in Windows Vista and tends to occur for a few different reasons. One notable issue is anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that perform a system scan and remove any instances of viruses and/or malware.
Without going into too much detail there is quick fix available from Microsoft at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Scroll down to "Fix it for me", and just click "Fix." This will run a quick installation, and then ask you to restart your computer. If it doesn't ask you, then restart it manually.
Your CD/DVD drive should now show up in My Computer, and should be recognized by all programs.
Hope this helps!
