Sounds like you may have a problem with Choke adjustment, or perhaps a broken choke cable. Do you have a workshop manual?

My Craftsman lawn tractor will run for a while and then stop then sometimes after sitting for a while will run again. What should I check? I added fuel additive to gas just incase the fuel was bad.

Drain the fuel tank. Dispose of the gasoline responsibly.
Replace the fuel line between the tank and the carburetor.
Put fresh gas in the tank. See how long it runs.

While you're at it, change the oil and remove any debris from
the cooling fins on the engine. It may be overheating.

If it still doesn't run, you probably failed to replace the fuel line.
Trust me, this is part of good maintenance for these machines.

Where can I find an owner manual?

no problem Neil.
This topic is about how to operate a A Mitsubishi MT 300 Tractor

Here's a site where you can BUY parts manual and the service manual, but I guess these are not what you want

Here's another useful looking site (data only)

but on this page you'll find an 'operators manual' $44.95 about 3/4 of the way down. Note that this covers a small range of similar models (its described as generic)

Finally, you might try contacting Mitsubishi directly (by email or any other method) and asking them for help in finding an operator's guide I should try one of the many addresses given on this site mam= Mitsubishi Agricultural Machine, a company or division of the Mitsubishi organization. The 'contact' details under the contact tab were not available when I tried.

There are are sure to be Mitsubishi owners clubs around which might help you with all sorts of things, one is

Sorry, but that's the best I can do I assume you are in the USA

Valve covers and pans are really light, you use inch pounds and the spec is 5 to 12 inch pounds.

Pull plug andcheck and seeif it is Floded, see if plug is wet, and you can alson check and see if it is firing by grounding the the plug to the frame, with a ground wire and crak it over to see if you see it spark.

The engine is backfiring in idle, more so when driving, even worse when blade engaged. Could there be water in the gas?

Yes you could have water in the fuel. Drain it and save it. Unless it is over a year old. You can pour the good gass off the top of the water after it settles. The biggest job after removing the fuel line from the carburetor and draining. Then removing and replaceing the fuel filter, is removing the carburetor floar bowl and removing the water inside, then cleaning the bowl. After removal, be carefull not to damage the hanging float. Dont use carburetor cleaner on the carburetor after you remove the float bowl, due to the rubber o-ring. It can't handle the chemical, it will swell to the point of it being to large to fit back in, and you will have to replace. Next, leave the fuel line off at the carburetor and fill the tank to wash out any trash in the lines. Once fuel starts to run ( catch it in a oil drain pan or empty oil can), then install new fuel filter, then reinstall fuel line on the carburetor. Problem should be solved. I as a preventitive and cleaner/stabilizer pour in some sea foam additive. :)

Craftsman riduing tractor turns over but won't

If you have spark and compression, the only thing left is fuel.

Check that fuel is being deluvered to the carb (remove fuel line to carb and make provision to catch ejected fuel. Crank engine. Fuel should be pumped from the tank and out the open line at a good rate.

If this checks out (or there is no pump fitted, but there is fuel issuing from the pipe), check the electrical connector on the bottom of the carb. There should be battery voltage on this conection for the engine to run - if not - that's the problem.

If that checks out, the cut-off solenoid (fed by the connection you just checked) is suspect.

Fuel problem?

Mukini does make inline fuel pumps. If there is a wire going to it then it is more than likely a fuel pump. I would replace the fuel filter, and air filter. I would also purchase a can of Seafoam cleaner at most auto parts stores. Pour in the correct amount in the fuel tank, as listed in the directions on the can. I have seen this work wonders on small engines with fuel problems.
