1997 chevy cavalier brake problems

When i push my breaks on a slick surface my front breaks make a horrible chattering/grinding noise and do not work at all. it seems to sound like the abs is trying to work but it does not work at all. my light does not come on and my breaks are new. anyone know? or know where to find a diagram of this system so i know what to start changing out

A slick surface has nothing to do with it, it would actually be less of a noise on a slick surface, and if its a wet road, the water acts as lubricant on the pads, it sound like the job was done wrong, a pad clip broke, they did not clean the rotor( bad groves or chips in rotor, may had needed a resurface)
or they did resurface the rotor too good and the pads glazed over and are like to hard surfaces touching.
You need someone to pull the front two tires and inspect the calipers and rotors, someone that knows what they are doing. If the pads are still new and the rotor is slick,(very smooth ) they need to be ruffed up with a coarse sand paper, or the sand disk that mechanics use on rotors.

The abs system pluses fluid to the brakes, when you brake hard you
can hear it working, but there should not be any grinding noise.
Drive 30-40mph and stop as fast as you can,on dry road.
If its ok, no grinding, no uneven pull, stops quickly, then it could
be the abs system getting wet causing sporadic on and off.

Unless a dealer did your brake, you should remove all tires and inspect the drums and rotors, unless you don't know what your looking for, if the pads, shoes, rotors, drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, and spring hardware are all ok and the job was done right, then it is the abs system. I have seen ASE mechanics
that I would not fix a bird house, let alone a car, so just because someone did a brake job does not mean it was done right.

You should go to an auto parts store and get a chiltons book,
and either buy it or look at the system diagram like you asked.

Grinding noise around front wheel hub on Chevy cavalier

I would guess it is your wheel hub, but if it occurs while the car is on and not moving, it might be your a/c compressor. When they go out they make a terrible grinding noise.

1999 Chevy Cavalier When I am driving and turn the steering wheel there is a grinding/chattering noise from the front of the car. Is it the cv joints or the wheel bearings?

If it is wheel bearings the noise would be there all the time with a growing whine as you accelerate, to me I would say the drive shafts {CV joints} need to be replaced. Sorry to bare the bad news, Remember we are here to help as best we can, good luck

Grinding noise front end.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

Rumbling & grinding under front end

Watch out! You might have a loose wheel! Check those wheel nuts. If not, a loose brake caliper, or last if not least, a bad wheel bearing. Don't drive it until you find out what the heck is wrong! Could be dangerous.

I have a 2000 Cavalier, it started squeeling a little when stopping (but stops fine). The squeel got worse and now does it when i drive, and when i stop it makes a grinding noise buit still stops fine? Any...

YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE BRAKES...ASAP
The sqeal was the brakes warning you that they were getting low, when they were sqeeling all the time, they were telling you they were about gone. Now that they are grinding, you will most likely need rotors as well. Get them replaced asap !
