Exmark disengages and backfires after runing for 1/2 hour or so

The backfire indicates a timing problem. Did you hit something at some point in the past? If so you may have damaged not sheared your timing key, this would still allow you to start your machine. If your mower runs for a short period, it warms up enough to put timing out. What I mean is when hot expansion, when cold contraction. Check your shear key for the problem. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

Ign timing 16.5 b/s motor mtd ride on. or cyl has fuel in it on cold start.ok most times on hot run ,can still play up at times

You cannot alter the ignition timing, it is set by the ignition unit and the flywheek key, if it has sheared the key it will knock the timing out, if the valve clearances are not correct the auto deco valve in the engine will not work and will increase the compression to the point where the starter motor cannot crank the egine over.

Try new spark plug, fresh fuel, and new air filter. If you have hit something with the blade it may well have sheared the flywheel key knocking the ignition timing out.

My son hit the edge of a paving stone with the mower. He says that it killed the mower and then he could not restart it and that it was making a noise like the blade was hitting something when he tried. ...

Do not run it like it is. At a minimum you have partially sheared the flywheel key. That upsets the ignition timing. Remove the flywheel and inspect the key, replace if any damage whatsoever. The key is a little piece of soft metal that is designed to give way when you hit something hard. After repairing that, remove plug and turn the engine over by hand to see if anything is hitting in the engine. Probably could do that first to let you know how bad it is. If no unusual noises from the engine or knocking of parts, try turning over with pull cord checking again. Then you can put the plug in and attempt to start it after flywheel key replacement.

I hope this helps.

Does the blade need to be on for my 6.5hp self propelled toro mower to start? It keeps backfiring and the blade key is striped.

I am not familiar with this model. However, just about all lawn mower engines rely on the blade to act as a flywheel, a very important factor in engine operation.

I hope this helps you ...

How to reset timing on a Kawasaki 4-stroke lawnmower engine. I replaced the flywheel key after an employee had hit something. It is still very hard to pull start.

The flywheel key is the only way to set the timing. If it has a blade clutch that may have been damaged when it hit something. If it does not have a blade clutch, it has a brake on the flywheel that is not operating correctly. Did you check to see if the blade and/or shaft got bent in the mishap?
