Many current machines you need to take apart to oil. Then you oil every surface that rubs. Such as all the bushings and linkages. The exception being the tension discs.

SOURCE: Toyota sp100 sewing machine - can't lower foot pressure on clothing

Berend: Thick fabrics require a longer stitch length. If the longer stitch length doesn't work check your attachments for an Easy Feed foot (It sort of mimics a walking foot.)

Toyota 8000 sewing machine doesn't sew fancy stitches any more. I think the pattern wheels have seized up?

Very possible the parts have seized if it is a mechanical machine. Not knowing your machine, I would think lubing with a clear oil (like Tri-flow Synthetic Lube or good quality sewing machine oil) may help if you can get to those parts. Avoid any computer parts, plastic/nylon gears, rubber belts. On the other hand, a thorough service call could be very beneficial for more than just fixing the stitch selector.

Why does the sewing machine slow down on it's own.

Either it is lacking oil, or the motor may be at fault.
