Disconnect the divice uninstall the driver restart the laptop and then reinstall the driver again restart the laptop then connect the device it works.

You dont state the model of scanner you have but here is a link to Canons website Im sure you can locate the driver you need there and they are free to you.

got to the web site for the scanner manufacturer select down load for that model and select win 7 os
down load and run
Microsoft no longer supports win 7 so the scanner driver will not be listed in win 7

download microsoft office for window 7,64-bit

I use win 7 x86 (don't know if it works for x64).

Yes, the scanner is rather old, but it sitll does the job.
