Question about Refrigerators
I have an Amana side-by-side refrigerator that wasn't cooling very well. The compressor/fan was running. I took the stuff out of the freezer and found the vent (intake?) on the bottom has completely iced up. So I took a hairdryer to it to defrost it. Unfortunately I forgot to turn the unit off and didn't notice the compressor turning off while I was defrosting it. Now the compressor won't turn on again. I've laid a cold towel over it for about 1/2 hour now, it feels warm. I'm guessing the overheat/overcurrent protection jumped in? But it still haven't restarted after 1/2 hour. I also checked the start relay and shook it. Doesn't seem to be loose inside. Did I break the compressor blowing hot air into the vent? If it is the overcurrent/overheat relay, does it reset itself or do I have to buy a replacement? Thanks for the help.
Plug it in. It may be in Defrost cycle, nothing runs when in defrost cycle. Amana's are famous for defrost terminators to go bad. The fan in the back should be running even if the compressor is bad. Do you hear a clicking in the compressor? If so the overload in the compressor is bad.

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.
