SOURCE: brush roll wont turn

Might be that the the idler wheel is stuck and not engaging the V belt. If you look down just past the V belt you will see a black roller, it needs to be against the belt. It is either stuck or the asm. is broken.

SOURCE: I have 2 Hoover Wind

The Hoover WindTunnel self propelled is a machine that we see in our retail stores (Vacuums Unlimited) constantly. The benefit of having a supposed "self-propelled" machine wears of quickly after the numerous time you will need to take this machine in for repair.

It's unfortunate you've had to spend so much money already on repairing this machine. I know you've said you've already replace the belts and filters, but if you want you can check out a video we made on repairing the Hoover Windtunnel.

If you are looking for a reliable upright, at GoVacuum we'd recommend the Sebo X4 upright (http://www.govacuum.com/seauxseupvac.html). The machine is incredibly reliable and easy to maintain. Thus far, we haven't had one warranty repairs come through our doors. The machine itself has a lifelong warranty on the belt because the machine automatically shuts off the motor if an obstruction is detected, preventing any undue stress on the motor or belt.

SOURCE: burning smell

I had burning smell and some visible smoke which I tracked down to the handle area. The mains socket at the bottom of the handle had burned out. When I pulled the plug out I noticed that the prongs were blackened and scorched. I will replace the socket.

I have a Upright Hoover Elite. Can't get belt back on right.

The belt loops over the motor shaft and the brush roller. Verify that the arrows on the end caps of the brush roller are facing DOWN or you will be doing the job over again. Start with the motor shaft and stretch the belt to allow the brush roller to seat. A new belt can require a strong pull on the brush roller to get it seated.

The brush bar isn't going round ?

your problem seems to be the belt has snapped. Underneath the the hover there is a rubber belt that connects around the brush bar and around the motor, this belt will be broken. They can purchased from any hoover shop for a couple of pounds.

Brush roller stopped working

the belt snapped. you will have to buy a new one at like walmart. and then take out all the screws on the bottom where the roller is. then you should see the broken belt. replace it by taking out the brushroll and slipping the new belt around the brushroll and around the metal spinner. and put it all back together.

Beater bar not turning

The number one cause of the "beater bar" (or brush roller) not rotating is a broken belt.

The number two cause of brushes not rotating is that something is jammed & wound around the roller, preventing it from rotating.

For the belt: If you remove the screws holding the bottom plate, you should see one (or maybe two) short, wide rubber belt(s) that goes around the roller.

If this is broken, it's easy to replace. They do break because of age and wear. One of the leading causes of breakage is when the roller gets something - a curtain cord, for example - wrapped around it. If you don't immediately shut off the vacuum & remove the cord, the belt will continue to try to turn the roller (which can't turn), and this generates a lot of heat in just a few seconds.

You can find belts at places like Sears, Home Depot, or your local vacuum shop.

For just the roller: Turn the vacuum over on its side and inspect the roller. Will it turn? Can you see something wound around it that's jamming it? While you here, take a minute and clean the roller... including using scissors or a knife to snip & remove wound hairs & threads. A clean and healthy roller will help to keep your belt happy!

Brushes don't move. vacuum motor works

The brushes on the roller are driven by a wide, short rubber belt. These belts get old, worn, overheated, and break periodically.

It should be a fairly simple matter to unscrew & remove the plate, revealing the belt and roller assembly. You can get a replacement belt at Sears or nearly any vacuum shop.

While replacing the belt, it would be a good idea to take scissors or a knife (careful!) and remove the hair & other material that's wound around your roller. One thing that can cause a belt to break is when you're vacuuming & accidently pick up a string, a shoelace, a piece of cord... you know how fast that gets wound around the brush roller and locks it up? At that point, the belt is still trying to rotate the roller (which won't rotate)... and within seconds, the belt will get extremely hot. This can cause it to break, or reduce its life significantly.

This should be an easy fix, requiring nothing more than a replacement belt and a screwdriver. Good luck!

Is the roller suppose to continously go around when running? Doesn't seem to change mat in carpet when going over it. Doesn't seem to be much suction..

That means that you need to replace the belt. The belt is what turns the roller brush, and when it is stretched or worn it doesn't. You can get replacement belts here:

Every so often I get a smell of burning from my g4 Kirby vacuum. I noticed it's when I'm vacuuming a fairly new rug on this house I clean. Should I be concerned?

If it is a smell of burning rubber - most likely your vacuum belt is overdue for replacement.

At this point - remove the brush roller, remove the old belt, clean off your brush roller and remove any string or hair that may be bound up around it (usually around where the belt goes or on the sides), and put on a new belt. Your Kirby should act good as new if your bag is replaced at the same time.

If the brush roller has too much string and hair wrapped around it, many times the brush roller will not spin as fast as the belt is driving it and you will get that burning smell.

The roller brush will not rotate even after replacing with new belt- the skinny one

My roller wouldn't turn and the problem was that the larger flat self propel belt had gotten stretched. I replaced it with a new belt and the roller works great now. So perhaps you need to replace that belt also. Hold it up to a new belt and see if it is significantly larger and you'll know it stretched.

Eureka 4870: Brush roller turns even in hose setting.

You either have the wrong size belt, most likely too small, or you have installed a new belt incorrectly. When you open the cover on the bottom of your vac, you will see the pulley that moves as you flip the switch from floors to carpet. The belt does not go around this pulley. When activated(carpet) the pulley puts tension on the belt causing it to turn the roller. When switched back to hard floors, the belt looses tension allowing motor to cause suction but disabling roller. Also, the dial on top of vac is only to direct suction, not for disabling roller
