Question about Galaxy Radios DX-979 40-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

Adjust modulation pot cb

This is a mobile cb. I'm looking for the ssb modulation pot in the galaxy dx-979. The radio transmits with 8 watts on am and only about 3 watts on ssb! Shouldn't it be the other way around?

SOURCE: power meter on my dx-979 barely moves off of 0

I would check the radio with an external meter to see if it is the transmitter or the Meter in the radio. If it is the meter in the radio it could have a bad detection Diode or just oout of adjustment or even a bad calibration pot. other wise start looking to fix your transmitter like finals or other similar problem.

Derating of this component will cool operation, provide better voltage stability, decrease wobble, allow voltage increase to 14.5 volts comfortably. (replace 10 volt caps in this section of the radio to a minimum of 16 volts before increasing supply voltage to this level)and provide faster swing rise time, Replace Q37 2SA473 to a 2SA1012-0 or ECG153 this will improve the clarity and volume of the modulation and it will also run a lot cooler.

SOURCE: Galaxy DX 959. SSB

on ssyou are some what familiar with working on radio's. just make sure before you pull your hair out aligning the radio that you made sure it definitely is not tx on ssb. b the.Mic gain will increase the modulation. it could just be a meter issue. confirm this by having some one on another radio on ssb the same channel listen for you. if he cannot hear you then the ssb is blown out.sounds likelike

Galaxy 979 SSB Modulation Problem Voice Cuts Out.

It sounds like you had a cold solder joint. Leaving it in the sun probably temporarily corrected it. I would take it to a tech to have all the solder joints corrected, unless you are handy with a soldering iron. The problem will most likely come back.

All you have to do is pull the top cover off, which will show the bottom, or trace side of the board. Using a soldering iron, make sure any solder joint that doesn't fully look soldered and make sure the solder is fully covering the joint. If need you may have to add solder.

As for the frequency counter going nutty when you modulate, Don't worry about it. There is nothing wrong. Because when you modulate you are modulating the carrier signal you are changing the signal so the counter will interpret that as a different freq because it cannot differentiate. Freq counters are for use with carrier only. As long as the carrier shows correct, it is right.

Just want to know if i should use my ll203 amp in am or ssb mode when running with a cobra CB radio?

What radio?? Does it have single side band(SSB)? If not, then don't use SSB.

AM - amplitude modulation
SSB - single side band.

If you have SSB, there would be a switch on it to transmit in SSB. If not, it is AM only.

Second, Has this radio been worked on to be able to run on an amp? If not, you will blow the amp.

A CB radio transmits dead keys with 4 watts of power, and transmits with 4 watts of audio.

a 4 watt dead key is too much for a linear amp. You will smoke the transistors. Also, 4 watts of audio is not enough to drive it properly. You won't get full power.

The dead key needs to be around 2 to 2 -1/2 watts,or what ever makes the linear dead key half its peak wattage., and the modulation (audio) turned up all the way.

It doesn't sound like you know too much about CB radio's. Not a big deal, you can learn. For right now you may want to take it to a cb shop and tell them you want a peak and tune, and set up to run a linear.

You can find CB shops usually at truck stops. Some area's they are other places. Check the internet for local shops.
