SOURCE: how to replace a switch-lid on a whirlpool washer

You can check various appliance repair websites for self help manuals, or you can follow these steps:

First of all, unplug your washer. You will need to remove the console in order to get to the lid switch. I believe your washer has release tabs under the console at each front corner. Simply slide a putty knife straight in from the front at each corner and push in while lifting up. You should feel the release tabs push in and the console will pop up. Or, you may have a console that has removable end caps. They can be removed by gently prying up on the top of them from the rear on each side. You may have to use a small screwdriver for this. The caps should pop right off. Once removed, you will need to loosen a screw under each cap. Once you have the console loosened, carefully lift it up and lay it back over the rear panel of the washer in its resting position. Be careful not to damage the small plastic hinges that hold it in place. Now you will need to perform the following steps:

1. Under the console you will find the lid switch connector. Unplug the switch from the connector.

2. There will be two brass colored clips. You will need to remove these to remove the machine casing. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver away from you while holding into the groove and the clip will release.

3. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Now pull the case from the frame by lifting from the back first.

You do not have to remove it all the way from the frame. Just enough to gain access to the switch. All there is to the switch is a couple of screws holding it in and a ground wire. It's a pretty easy repair job.

Once you've completed your switch installation, make sure you get the case back on the frame correctly by following these steps:

1. While looking down through the lid opening, place the front lip of the machine case UNDER the washer frame and start leaning it back onto the frame. There are four small cleats that must fit into four slots on the case or the washer will vibrate. Make sure the frame is seated properly, lean forward from the front of the washer, grasp both sides of the rear panel and pull towards the case. The rear panel should be seated and flush with the casing before inserting the retaining clips.

2. Insert the brass-colored clips into the slot on the washer rear panel first, then push straight down into the opening on the top of the washer with some force. If you have the case seated correctly, the clips will snap back in.

3. Make sure you plug the connector from the console back into the lid switch receptacle and close the console.

I hope you find this helpful. If you have any questions please let me know by posting comments.

Have you purchased a lid switch yet? Most major appliance repair centers carry them. The price is about $35. If you have not purchased one yet, let me know what your EXACT model number is (located on the rim of the wash tub opening under the lid) and I will locate a part number for you. I hope this information helps you.

SOURCE: whirlpool duet washing machine door lock error

My front loader has the door locked and I can't open it. I have already turned off the power and that didn't solve the problem. The manual says that if you try to open the door too soon after the cycle completes, then the door locks. How do I open it now? What do I do?

Charla, By what you have stated, it sounds like a lid switch failure. I recommend checking the screws for the lid hinge first. The lid has to be closed for the motor to run in the washer. If the lid switch is faulty, it will act as if the lid is open. A quick check you can do is to run a cycle with the lid switch jumped. If the washer operates, the lid switch needs to be replaced.
To jump the lid switch you need to unplug the washer and open the console.Once you have the console open, locate the connector for the lid switch. Place an insulated jumper between the gray and white wires. Not the green it is a ground and will cause a short. After inserting the jumper make sure it will not touch anything metal, plug the washer in. Then start the washer in a cycle, and let it go. If the washer completes the cycle, you need to replace the lid switch. Remove the jumper and order the part. The jumper is only of the test do not continue to operate after test.

When we start Washing Machine it takes the water as it required but agitator does not work & not spining. Please tell me the reason & also solution of the said problem. Thanks &...

the lid safety switch is bad, this switch located under the lid kills the power to the machine when you open the lid during any cycle, but the fill cycle for obvious safety reasons, remove 2 screws from the control panel, then 2 brass colored clips under this panel with a screw driver, then unplug a connector from the top of the unit, this is the lid safety switch, you can try bypassing 2 of the 3 wires that go from this plug to the control panel which will be either black or white or gray wires, but leave the green wire (usually found in the middle or on one end of this connector) alone as this is the ground wire, then if the washer runs by jumping the other 2 wires, then replace the switch by tilting the cabinet towards you all the way to the floor and replacing this switch under this cabinet but (be careful when bypassing this switch( if you try it) as when its plugged in there is 120 volts across these wires)

The machine won't drain and stops after wash cycle.

Sounds like a broken lid switch. You can locate this by looking around the lid and the lip, if I knew which machine it was I could instruct you to by pass it. If it is a whirlpool or roper it can be jumped under the control panel at the plug on the lid switch side by splicing the gray wires together, ignore the green.

Washer not draining or doing spin cycle

Lid switch has gone bad. You can bipass, but better to replace switch, they should only cost about $10. It is there for safety purposes.

Whirlpool LSQ8543JQ1, washer stopped full of water, will not start back up, seems like no power to it, check fuse box and everything else that is running of same.

Pretty much exactly what guest above me said. I have a lsq8543jq1 also, was stopping after agitation.

At first thought it was something more serious, since the dial seemed to make a humming/grinding/buzzing noise when it was switching to agitation cycle, but that seems to just be a timer before the drain/spin cycle kicks in.

I had a washer full of water, so rather than wait till I could get a part (or hand drain -what a pain), I just grabbed a paper clip and rigged the switch so it thinks the door is shut and voila, drains and finishing cycle as I type.

The switch is a safety device to prevent accidents; bad injuries could result if the door is opened while the washer is in spin cycle. I don't recommend this as a long term solution - especially if you have kids. I have 2 and will be ordering the new part asap.
