Question about Crosley 40-pint Dehumidifier

Open Question

Crosley 70-pint Dehumdifier high-pitched whining

I just purchased the 70 pint Crosley dehumidifier, model number cdf700w1...I let it acclimate to room temperature for four hours. When I turned it on the fan sounded nice and quiet....however once the compressor kicked on it made and continues to make a high-pitched whining noise. This does not sound like a good thing. I left a message for the appliance vendor, but have not heard back yet. Is this common for this type of dehumidifier? My GE never made this noise, although it stopped working after one season. The Crosley is collecting water but I cannot stand the high-pitched whine. I am afraid to leave it unattended....any advice?

SOURCE: Collecting no water

My crosley dehum. acted the same way. It turned out to be a bad defrost thermostat on the evaporator coil.

SOURCE: I have a Crosley Model

It may very well be that you have the humidity extraction level set to high. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have a manual unit, set the control to Maximum. Since it's a basement application, raising the unit up off the floor on to a sturdy table or counter top that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full bucket of water, may also solve the problem. As, the air temp at floor level is colder than at chest or shoulder level. Dehumidifiers do not work well at temperatures between 40 - 60 degrees F. Unless you have what's called a Low Temp Model. They are specifically designed for basement applications.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem

We just bought the DE45EJ. We removed it from the box and plugged it in....nothing. No lights, no beeps, no hint of life. The power source is good. The room temperature is normal. The bucket isn't full...

If you just purchased and it won't turn ON, don't waste time trying to fix the unit. Return it to the place of purchase for a replacement unit or a refund.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Why is my dehumidifier icing up.

The room temperature is probably too cold, or there's poor airflow
Here's some info that should help you figure out what's causing the problem:

If the evaporator coil is frosting completely and evenly, the most common cause is that the room temperature is too cold. Most dehumidifiers are not meant to be used when the room temperature drops much below 70°F and certainly not below 65°F (depending on humidity). There are however some models called "basement" dehumidifiers which are.

Another possible cause on standard models is poor air flow through the unit. If the fan motor is not turning fast enough (or at all) or the evaporator, condenser or filter (if used) being plugged can also cause this symptom .

Need float switch that cuts off dehumidifer when bucket gets full

Without a Model Number or Part Number it's hard to help you. But here are three links, where you can find the float switch, if it's still available. You'll definitely need the Model Number to find anything.

When do you use the dehumidifier?

In areas with poor circulation and humidity over 80%.
If the room temperature is close to 60, the coils may be frozen (completely encased in ice). If this is the case, move it where the water can drain off - about 1 gallon which may NOT run into the drain bucket.
I out mine over the floor drain.
Turn off and it will defrost over night.
Only specially made dehumidifiers work below a room temp of 60 degrees (the temp of a basement in winter).
Does it need to be running? A digital humidity sensor from Radio Shack is cheap and may tell you the humidity is OK - only 50% or less.
