SOURCE: replace blades on a john deere L120 mower deck

First make sure you have the tools, metric that is. The deck must be removed and turned over. To do this you must put the deck in the lowest position. Using a 15mm socket pull the belt tension spring pulley forward to detach from clutch. Next remove retaining pins located at the five deck brackets. This will allow the arms to slide off and the deck can be dragged out from under the mower. Turn deck over. Use a 18 inch 2x4 to block blades while removing the two 15mm bolts. The bolt heads will need to be cleaned so the socket can seat on bolt head. I use my torque wrench to get more leverage and i can use it to reset blade bolts to 64 ft lbs. While blades are of it is a god time to thoroughly clean underside of deck.

SOURCE: john deere 111 mower deck. Lift is in stuck in highest position

Looked up detailed isometric diagram w/ parts denoted on John Deere website. FixYa website was a litele misleading. I did not realize that accessing a question posted "for free" would cost me something to get the answer. It's kind of like askin a neighbor as a neighbor to give you a hand and then he sends a bill.
Thanks but no thanks

Craftsman Model Number: 917.377151 motor shuts down when blades engaged

The engaging of the mowdeck is cause an excessive demand of your engine. From that, we can assume your problem is in the deck. Since the power drive is all about belts and it threw the belts, from your information I can only deduce that either an object (stick-wood-rock) has wedge into a position that has stopped rotation of the blades. Also, each blade has a pulley/spindle. These have bearings which must be free to rotate.
A bearing failure or seizing can also cause the problem you report.

Follow safety rules in your manual to insure the engine cannot start. Attempt to rotate each blade to check for free rotation. If the do not you most likely will need to remove the mower deck and check further. An obstruction or seized spindle should be easy to determine and sit repair is easily possible.

Is there a safety mechanism / cable on Husqvarna LGT2554 that will not allow blades to engage if it runs out of gas while mowing

None. The only safety switch that prevent blades from engaging is the reverse switch but that will just kill the engine.

It is more likely that the deck drive belt has came off only of the pulleys.

Troy Bilt model 60TG I hit a small piece of wood and the tractor

If you haven't already, check to see if there is a hunk of wood wedged between the blade(s) and mower deck. I've seen that happen. I pried the hunk of wood out with a crowbar and life was good again. The second time, someone ran over a campfire log they didn't see under leaves last fall and bent the blade spindle. It basically froze the spindle in place even though there wasn't anything wedged in there. I removed the belt from the top of the mower deck and then it started just fine..... although the blades and shaft were toast and had to be replaced. If you can disengage the mower deck without removing the belt(s), try it if you haven't already. See if it starts that way. If not, the issue may be more serious such as a broken connecting rod in the engine. Try the simple stuff above first to troubleshoot the cause.

Strange noise from deck of Toro LX426

The engine wont have an impact with the deck because its belt driven. It sure sounds like you have a bad set of spindle bearings, just turning it by hand you wont hear any noise it has to be going fast to hear it. The noise may be coming from your clutch instead of the deck, and it sounds like the deck. Have these things checked out.

Dual blade mower leaves uncut strips between blades.

Had same uneven mowing problem with new Toro Z4200 XTR mower. Problem was one side of the U-shaped rear deck hanger rod had popped out of its chassis mount (did hit something with mowing deck). Removed hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Put end of U-shaped rear deck hanger rod back in the chassis mount and remounted hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Z4200 now cuts lawn evenly again.

Riding mower Safety Tips

Lawn mowers in general can be dangerous, but riding mowers and lawn tractors are even more so. Some models have better safety features than others. You’ll want to look for, at the very least: * A system that prevents the engine from starting unless the blade is disengaged and the machine is in neutral. * An automatic blade shut-off that stops the mowing blades if you stand up rather than sit on the machine, or if you leave the mower/tractor. * A system that stops the blade if you shift into reverse, or at least a lock that requires you to make a deliberate decision to mow in reverse.
