Webcam not recording video

Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right. But is does not harm to check if your Java, Flash and Quicktime software are installed and up to date. But certainly check your DirectX software, since all video applications, including webcams, use DirectX for video processing. Try downloading the latest DirectX version and install it (Windows XP: DirectX 9.0c - Windows Vista: DirectX 10). The Dell Inspiron line of laptop computers allows consumers to customize their system in a number of ways, from hardware specifications to color. The laptop also comes with an integrated webcam that can be used as a camera and for video Web chats. You can use the camera from the Dell Webcam Manager application, which controls all the functions of the camera.

Click the "Start" button on your computer, highlight "All Programs," and select "Dell Webcam Manager" from the list of available applications. Click on the "Webcam Center" icon. From the tab at the top of screen, select the action you want the camera to perform. You can use the camera to record videos, snap photos, detect motion, monitor remotely, and take time-lapse video. Press the "Record" button to start recording video or take a snapshot.

I am trying to install the dlink dcs 5220 camera, i have connected the camera to the router and the installation software has detected it. But everytime i click 'setup' all i get is a 'connection...

Welcome to Fixya

Try to uinstall and reinstall the software. Ping the camera if you are getting a reply. Reset the camera by pressing the small hole on the side. If everything is already done then same thing occur then you have a defective camera.

Thank you for using Fixya!

I dont know how to install my new lifecam !

Set Up and Use the VX-3000 personal web camera
  • 1 Install the software using the included CD and plug the LifeCam into a free USB port. For desktop use, place the LifeCam on a clear spot on your desk that's free of other objects, including cables. The camera should not be more than an arm's length away from you. For LCD (or similar object) use, push the center part of the camera's base upward, place the camera on the LCD and close the base around the monitor to secure it.
  • 2 Open the device software by clicking the Microsoft LifeCam icon on your Windows desktop. If no such icon exists on your Windows desktop, click "Start," click "All Programs" and locate the Microsoft LifeCam program in the list of programs there. After launching the LifeCam program, look at the image that appears. If necessary, adjust the camera to more precisely reflect your appearance. For best results, try to center the camera image on your head and shoulders.
  • 3 Click the video camera icon on the bottom panel of the LifeCam program to begin video capture. Video will begin recording, and you will see a "Recording Video" message beneath the live video image. To stop recording, press the same icon (the icon will have a red square with a blue background during recording).
  • 4 To begin audio capture, click the microphone icon on the bottom panel. To stop the audio recording, click the same icon (again, it will have a red square with a blue background during recording). To snap a photo, click the camera icon on the bottom panel.
  • 5 Access any of your captured video, audio or image files by clicking the folder on the bottom panel. The VX-3000 also provides the ability to edit video or image files using supported software. After snapping a photo or capturing video, click the "Edit" icon that appears beneath the thumbnail of the captured content.

How to set Static local IP Address for D-link DCS 5220 IP Camera? Am using Linksys WRTG54 Router, with SSID & WPA. I had set the D-Link DCS wireless to use the same SSID and WPA, but once I plug out...

To set a static IP on the camera, do the following:

    1. Chose an IP address for the camera that is outside your normal DHCP range but within your network subnet.
For example, if your router uses DHCP and gives out addresses in the range of up to, you should chose an IP address beyond that (e.g.
    2. Login to your camera's current IP address and go to Setup -> Network setup
    3. Turn off DHCP and type in the IP address that you chose into the configuration.
    4. Restart your camera.

The above should fix your Static IP address question.

With regards to your Wireless question, you should make sure of the following:
    1. Your router is set to broadcast its SSID
    2. Your router is setup to use WPA (not WPA2)
    3. Your AES password in the camera config is the same as that as the routers

    Hope this helps

    Losing wireless Connection

No solution known to fix this. Internal the software tries to refind itself.

In Linksys software there are two separate programs running. The video is sent to the wireless router and recorded on your computer. Whether it is alive or not and can be configured is a different program. That program requires the wireless camera be literally just a few feet from the wireless router. Say 5 feet or less. One configured you can move the camera to well over 100 feet from router fine.

But eventually it will lose connection and you have physically move camera back.

This is a major flaw of this system and why it won't work for a real application

    Inability access from other computers

You need to check with your router vendor on how to setup DMZ or Port Forwarding for your DCS-5220 in your router. (For Port Forwarding, please open BOTH HTTP Port and RTSP Port and select the Protocol as TCP for HTTP Port and select the Protocol as TCP/UDP(Both) for RTSP Port.

    Patroling During Record

Make sure you have setup the patrol points where the camera is supposed to patrol. You can test this from Setup.

Also, try to set a small move speed as I find that the image is very blurred to be of much use if the camera moves at the default speed.

    My camera doesn't record!!!

it may be a corrupt driver or a software glitch, remove the camera from usb port, uninstall driver and software and reinstall. Try camera in a different usb port and record again to see if the same thing applies. You can also try recording in windows movie maker 2 to see if the same problem occurs, atleast then you will know if its a camera hardware fault or not after trying 2 different recording programmes.
