It can't be done on any slot loading CD/DVD drive. It needs to be loaded into an old style tray loading drive. It sits in the indentation in the middle of the tray. These drives are available in external USB boxes or you could load the CD in an old PC and network it across to the Mac.

The only to get a mini CD out of your optical drive is to physically remove it from the drive. This means you will have to take the computer apart and then take the optical drive apart to remove the mini CD.
Hi
I think the answer is in your question. Pioneer DVD-RW drive, DVD+R disc.
For some reason known only to Apple, some drives do not work with all discs. Mine will not burn -R dual Layer discs.
If you are unable to boot from the CD's, and you are sure they are the CD's that are supposed to come with that model (the bundled CD's/DVD's are model specific), you may either have bad RAM or other damage to the logic board.
Try holding "D" when you try to start up from the discs instead of C, this should launch a hardware diagnostic utility. Run that, and see if it finds any other damage to the machine.
most recent apples will not take small discs, use a firewire lead and import on to iMovie then export to iDVD (you can edit simply in iMovie) and burn as many dvds as you want
