Lift the document feeder cover, and clean the scanner glass.

You may not understand the terminology, but EVERY fax machine ever built, uses what is called a scanner, and a scanner glass!

Sandmanmac is correct. There HAS to be a scanner element in ALL fax machines - If not, you may as well fax a blank piece of paper. The recipient will be expecting one as well. A tiny speck of dirt will cause a line for as long as it remains there - A dab of rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner on a cloth and cleaning the scan part eliminates the line - To test it - try the "Copy" mode. The same scan part is used to make copies with your fax machine. Just make sure you "keep it clean"!
