SOURCE: john deere 420 trouble starting getting gas and

The engine needs air, so be sure the air filter is clean. If it is not, replace it.

The engine needs spark. Replace the spark plug and be sure that the battery has a complete charge.

The engine needs good fuel so be sure the gas is newly purchased, not gas that has been sitting around for months.

SOURCE: JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR WONT START

ok, since you have the points, I assume you have the B43g Onan
engine. Was it running before the new parts were installed?
Check your point gap and make sure it is .016, plugs ahould be gapped at .025 Make sure your plug wires are good too. Should be somewhere between 0 and 10,000 ohms per foot, when measured with an ohmmeter. Once everything is rechecked for gap distance, make sure there is no spark by pulling plug out, leaving wire on and ground the outside of plug to the chassis of the tractor.
Crank over and look for the spark. Coils are about $100, so you want to eliminate everything else first.
Diagnosing a points ignition for no spark is really simple. Do you have 12V at the coil? Do you get a spark when you connect and disconnect the negative terminal of the coil to ground? If not you have a bad coil.

SOURCE: John Deere Lawn Tractor LX176. Battery discharge

Locate voltage regulator above battery to the left as you sit on machine, its behind frame that supports steering wheel.Once you have found it use a light to shine on harness and follow the brown wire that leads into regulator. The plastic around that wire should not be burnt or showing any other color. The LX series machines had a problem with brown wire coming loose and causing the charging light to stay on.Remove plug from reg and use small screwdriver to clean out wire and work it a little so it makes good contact.

I have a john deere x300 lawn mower won't start. There is no spark what should i check to rectify this problem.

Spark will originate from the ignition coil. Always make sure when checking for spark that there is no safety switch on or blades engaged etc first. If you have no spark, then your coil is bad period. Most people first try a new plug, but you can but a simple tester at advanced auto for 20 bucks. The ignition coil is located at the flywheel and most of the time is mounted with only 2 bolts. The clearance is easy to check, no more than a business card thick. Put it between the flywheel magnet and coil, unscrew the bolts a tad and the coil will set it self against the flywheels magnet, then retighten the screws, pull card out. BUT I doubt it's the clearance...Most of the times its simply the coil. That's what gives the spark that's the part u need. U can easily do the job yourself.

John deere gx345 has no spark at plug what is the cause?

need new coil pack or have short in harness grounding engine from running. check fuel line to carburator. 1. take float bowel off bottom of carb. do not touch float or pin holding float. crank engine over until fuel comes out of carb. If fuel comes out, you don't have fuel problem. put float bowel back on carb. 2. check for spark. take spark plug out of mower. put wire back on plug and place the threads on head [or metal of engine to ground the plug]. crank engine over for a few seconds to see if plug gets spark . [always double check with another spark plug that is good]. [[ Remember!!! you have to have someone sitting on the lawnmower to start. unless you by-pass safety switch [only do this if you understand how the safety switch works. NOT EXPLAINED HERE!!!]] If spark is present, there is no grounding problem. when engine is cool. 3. CHECK COIL PACK. for continuity. When the coil pack gets hot it will stop any juice to the plug. A>Check temp sensor B> Check Safety switches grounding out. C> Check for cut wiring harnes. [loose wires rubbing against pulleys, wires cut by rodents]. Hope this helps.........................GAS

John Deere LT 133 lawn tractor quits running after about 10 minutes.

Will it restart right away or does it have to cool down? If it has to cool down, then run it until it quits. Next remove the plug, reattach the plug wire, and ground the plug to the block. Finally try to start it with the key. If you get no spark or very weak spark then the ignition coil needs to be replaced.

Let me know how it goes.

Lack of Spark

If all of your tests are correct, the thing remaining is the ignition coil. A bit of a pain to get at and expensive too. Parts diagram here. Before you buy a new coil, see if there might be just a broken spark wire or loose connection at the spark plug contact end.
