Checking Relays (and fuses)

This tip is useful for all types of vehicles:

If you think that you may have a bad (burned out) relay: before you go buy a new one: purchase (if you don't have one) a fuse tester.

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Pull suspected "bad' relay
3. With fuse tester adjusted accordingly:
a. make sure relay is not melted, or coming apart
b. With the two prongs on the tester, touch two prongs on the relay until the light on the tester comes on. There is no way of knowing with two are the live ones except by touching two together.
c. If the light comes on, you're good to go; and if not...well, you know...replace the relay.

Thank you for checking out the tips at

Have spark with plug out. no spark with plug in . What is causing this

It sounds like the spark is weak and is breaking down under compression in the cylinder. Your spark should be fat at blue, when the coil is failing it becomes thin and white.

Replaced dryer drum bulb but light won't come on

First, test the bulb you just installed to make sure it works. Assuming it is a 110-120v bulb, you should be able to do this with any standard lamp in the house. If it's good, next test the socket in the dryer to make sure it has electricity going to it. Do this with a multi-tester and please be careful -- this is a live circuit. Set the tester to its highest AC Voltage setting. Touch the center "button" of the socket and with the other tester probe, touch the outer screw-in shell. It should show 110 to 120 volts. If no power, you'll need to break into the back and make sure all wires going to the socket are connected . . . which may have become jostled.

How to preform a compression test on a valkyie

Remove the spark plugs. Using a screw in compression tester, screw the tester into a plug hole and tighten it slightly. Open the throttle and crank the engine about six full revolutions. Record the reading and proceed to the next plug. Do the same on all the plugs, recording the readings and cylinder number each time. That is all there is to it. If you can only obtain a press in type compression tester it becomes a two man job as one person has to hold the tester while the other holds the throttle open and cranks the engine.

You have switch-plug combo.
1) Screws are color-coded.
Dark screws, brass screw, silver screw.

2) Electricians don't guess, they test
-Separate wires for testing. Do not untwist any wires that are twisted together. Note which wires were connected on same screw on previous device.
-Tape tester leads to wood sticks to keep hands away from power
-Turn power ON
-Test each wire to bare ground wire.
-Tester lights up on Hot wire. Hot connects to dark screw.

-Hot is identified.
-Test Hot to all other wires, except bare ground.
-Tester lights up on Neutral. Neutral connects to silver screw.

-Final wire goes to Load (light, fan, motor). This wire connects to brass screw.

Also take advantage of fixya phone service.

I can't seem to get my T5225 combo outlet to work. I connected it as directions said but only the light switch works, I tried changing it around & the outlet only works when the light switch is turned...

Electricians don't guess, they test.

Remove device.
Separate wires for testing.
Use ordinary 2-prong tester.
Tape wood sticks to tester leads to keep hands away from power.
Turn on power.

Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester will light up on Hot wire. This wire connects to dark-colored screw.
Hot is identified.
Now test Hot wire to each other wire in box, including white wires in back of box (exclude bare ground wire)
Tester will light up on Neutral wire. Neutral wire connects to silver screw. This will complete circuit to receptacle part of device.

The last wire goes to Load (light). This wire connects to brass-colored screw, and will complete circuit to light..

You can also take advantage of fixya phone support.
Fixya expert will walk you through the steps shown above for a price.

87 nissan pathfinder head lights

have you check the ground on that side of the light. it could be not properly grounded.
if there is no good ground, what would happen is that one bulb would become a ground for the other to light low where as the other one would not light anymore.

tnx again 4 using fixya,
