i just saw a post which I believe will solve my problem (I connected to the wrong coax antenna plug). I haven't tried, but I'm pretty sure that is the problem.
Here's the post from akai_owner from 2007:
Look at the back of your TV. Make sure your cable is hooked up to connector on far right, NOT the far left. (For analog cable TV.)
Push "source" button on remote or side of TV to cycle through TV inputs. Wait one second between pushes. You want to stop just before the source that displays "AV" on TV screen. It should show a number, for the current channel number.
If you are using an analog cable box, try setting the TV channel to 3 or 4. If you use no cable box, try changing channels on TV to find an active one. If no luck, make sure your cable service is active (subscription active). Cable companies disconnect it between residents of an apartment/house.

Hi, You do need an HDTV and a DVR (digital video recorder) to view any Digital or HD source. By the way you will not be able to record digital programs with your VCR because it won't work. All you will get is a scrambled picture. That is why you use a Digital decoder to unscramble the picture. Good luck
