Hi, Check your video card and make sure it is seated properly, then check that the lead to the monitor is still attached properly, if this is ok then try a different card, The usual problem is video/graphics card failure, Doe's your monitor still display a light to indicate power is on? Try this step...

1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery.
Note : Please see that there are no external devices or cables connected to the Notebook.
3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and do NOT connect the battery now.
5. Turn on the Notebook power.

Still the problem is not solved means it will be a hardware issue, you want to contact HP Customer Care.

How do I troubleshoot my motherboard on my HP Pavilion a1020n. This is my motherboard PTGD1-LA.

A) Power Supply.

One of the leading causes of computer failure.

LED lights come on? Fans spin, or spin a few times, and stop?

Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.
1) ALL of the LED lights combined use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

3) A typical Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is. (Older Processors such as Pentium II's for example, use less)

No Processor operating = No Signal on the monitor.
No video signal.

But if you do think it's a problem with the Ol' Goldfish 3, look at the Electrolytic Capacitors on the motherboard.

My hp pavillion a1540n won't boot up. The power button is on but no boot menu on the monitor. Monitor is blank

I suggest you check the Power Supply. Bad Power Supply, weak Voltage power rail.

1) ALL the LED lights use less than 1 Watt of power.
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts
3) A typical Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is. (Older one's use less)

The HP Pavilion a1540n specifications state it uses an AMD Athlon X2 4200+, processor.

(2.0GHz. Dual Core. Built upon the Windsor Core. Uses a Socket AM2 processor socket)

HP Support > Pavilion a1540n desktop computer > Specifications,

Can use up to to 89 Watts,

Enough power for the LED lights, and fans, but Not enough for the Processor.

No Processor operating, No computer.
No computer, No Signal to the monitor.
(Video signal)

The Power Supply used is an ATX style, and 300 Watts.

A computer only uses the power it needs, and No more.
If you install a Power Supply with more Wattage than the original, it will be fine.

Laptop won't complete boot. LEDs lit and not blinking, fan runs, black screen, then auto-restarts itself in about 45 second cycles.

sounds like the video chip on the motherboard.

if it is a nvida video chip... then it got to hot, this is do to how it was made, flaw in design!1

look for a nvida sticker to confirm..
