Mouse worked when computer was shut down, did not work when computer turned back on. Batteries replaced; ''transmitter'' unpplugged/replugged; computer rebooted. Light on mouse is on, but no control of cursor. Can't troubleshoot or go to Device Manager because no cursor. Computer running Windows XP; all other computer functions appear normal at startup.

- Sorry for the oversight....this is a wireless optical mouse; the "base station/transmitter" was unplugged and replugged from the USB port on the computer; and the computer was rebooted both before and after that procedure (as well as replacing the mouse batteries). The light on the mouse (usually denoting connectivity) is on, but the mouse does not function at all. And I can't check Device Manager or do any other diagnostics because there is no cursor function since the mouse is not working. The mouse worked when the computer was shut down last night, and did not work when the computer was restarted this morning.

Microsoft's Elite Wireless keyboard and mouse is an excellent combination for use, according to your criteria. It costs less than $65.00 and is easily connected to replace a wired keyboard and mouse.
I have been using two of them for years now, and have never had a problem with them.
They eliminate excess wires, and work like a charm.
