Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

Refrigerator warm, freezer cold

Kenmore 596.71272101 I recently replaced the defrost timer and that helped the original problem (fully frosted coils). After ~10 days, there is no cold air coming out of the air channel in the refrigerator. I thought it might be plugged, but I can snake a wire through the channel between the freezer and the fridge. The freezer air fan is running well and blowing cold air around the freezer. The top temperature adjustment is at the coldest setting. After I manually defrost the freezer compartment, cold air magically flows to the refrigerator again. I clearly don't understand something! After 10 more days, the refrigerator gets warm again and mo air flows to through the channel. I'd appreciate any ideas.

SOURCE: Refrigerator warm, freezer cold

Totally Unreasonable if you don't mind me saying so. The person who told you that story was thinking of an absorption unit more than likely.

Your proble is related to the defrost system of your refrigerator. There is a timer that automatically starts the defrost. It energizes the heaters that defrost the cooling coil. After the coil reaches a preset temperature a defrost terminator turns the heater off for the remaining time on the timer cycle. You could have a bad timer (stalled) which would not start the defrost. Locate the timer and turn the clutch head screw clockwise very SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The defrost should take place and will be indicated by water in the drain pan under the refrigerator. If after 25 minutes it does not restart in the cooling mode turn the screw once again to the second click and replace the timer.

If the refrigerator restarts after 18-22 minutes and defrost does not take place your problem is in the heater circuit. Open heater or thermostat (termination switch)

SOURCE: Freezer works, frig does not. Also ice build up in freezer coil

I just worked on a FF801W which is supposed to be very similar. The defrost heater in mine was of the glass tube type and located under the evaporator. There was a bimetal thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator and a thermal fuse (sealed in a clear plastic tube) nearby. The connections were behind a little plastic cover (2 screws) in the back wall just above the evaporator.

Mine was iced up like yours and I had to defrost it with a hair dryer. All the defrosting parts in the freezer compartment turned out to work so I now suspect the defrost timer (down by the compressor). I've marked it and I'm waiting to see if it's turning.

Fridge is warm freezer is cold

Hello Abo Karin,

You are likely experiencing a DEFROST failure
(most commonly a defrost PCB failure)...
part number 67006740 item 5 on your exploded
case view (top center as viewed from the front).

There are typically only three (3) elements to a DEFROST
power control circuit:
- Defrost Printed Circuit Board ( PCB as noted above)

- Heater element to WARM the EVAPORATOR

- DEFROST thermostat... inhibit excess heat
(closed circuit at freezing - Opens at room temperature)

Check your defrost pan...
there should be water there DAILY...

IF not: you are assured that your DEFROST fails.

Per your DESCRIPTION...
You need to look for a SUDDEN REASON (huge air leak)
why FROST would form so quickly...
USUALLY a big pizza box... BUT ANYTHING blocking a
TIGHT DOOR SEAL will cause massive frosting.

It is taking moisture from the WARM ROOM AIR and blocking your evaporator...

a PROPERLY functioning defrost circuit would remove that frost
at least DAILY... and the EVAPORATOR fan would properly chill the refrigerated side blowing cold air from the FREEZER.

Yes ... all INTERIOR panels must be in place for the refrigerator to function properly.

Hope this helps

I have a Kenmore side by side refrig. and the freezer side keeps getting full of frost, and the refrig. side is barely cold, and keeps spoiling food. I've had a tech come out and check things out and...

Either your defrost element or timer is bad or your fridge is low on freon. Frost is a sign of outside air getting in but it can also be a sign of the defrost heating element not kicking in and the defrost timer turns it on for a few minutes each day and a defrost limit keeps it from getting two warm during the defrost cycle. good luck hope this helps

Kenmore 52532101 side by side freezer and refrigerator not cooling - any suggestions? Doesn't appear to be frozen up.

Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

How to check stuff>
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Ice builds up on evaporator coils. After chipping off the ice, refrigerator is cold again. This lasts only a few weeks as ice builds up. Eventually, the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is very warmer....

Assuming this was originally a frost-free model, either the defrost cycle timer died or the defrost heating element died. If it's the timer, you might be able to manually start and end a defrost cycle every few days. If it's the heating element, you may be stuck with what you're doing or an expensive repair or buying a new refridgerator.

My fridge is warm, the frezzer is cold but not freezing. what could be wrong?

Hi, Look inside the freezer and see if there is frost building up on the rear panel inside. If there is frost, Remove the rear panle and check the defrost heater and bi-metal switch (must be tested while cold) for continuity, If either of these switches show an open circuit, replace it.
If these parts test ok, replace the defrost timer.
Other things to look for, make sure fans and compressor are running.
Please let me know if this helps or if I can assist you further.

Kenmore 596.72913200 Refrigerator is Warm, but Freezer is Cold

There should be a push in switch on the door frame that you can push to see if the evaporator fan is functioning. You will be able to hear it when you push in on the switch.

If your problem is defrost related you will see frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer . If it is defrost related it will be ether the timer, heater, or defrost thermostat that is your problem. If it is the timer, locate where the timer is. Sometimes located in the area of the temperature controls with a hole through which you can turn a clutch head screw clockwise very SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. This will start the defrost. if after 30 minutes it defrosts but does not start cooling again turn the screw just a little further and you will hear another click. The compressor should start. If this is you conditions the timer needs to be replaced. If it fails to defrost and restarts to cooling mode after 18-22 minutes the problem is in the defrost heater circuit.
