Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

Nnsn960s Panasonic door has to be slammed

The microwave will not operate unless you slam the door very hardly. Sometimes it takes on the first slam, other times it takes several tries. Is it fixable or should we scrap it?

SOURCE: Have to Slam Door to get it to work - Advantium 120

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

This can be caused by slamming the door or by habitually opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

SOURCE: GE spacemaker Profile XL1800 vent fan will not shut off

It may be a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel, such as a sticky relay.

I would suspect a sticky relay first, but the door switches should be checked.

SOURCE: nEED TO REPLACE THE WHITE PLASTIC CATCH ON NEXT TO THE CONTROL PANEL AS IT SNAPPED OFF AS MY SON SLAMMED THE DOOR

By the nature of the oven main face plate and the locking latch being attached to the safety system the replacement cost is usually higher than a replacement microwave oven.

In your case replacing the microwave with another one is more sensible. Your oven is an obscure model as it is, I'd suggest a sharp brand.

Sounds like there is a stray piece of wire or other metal floating around inside the case. Remove the cover and any breakables in the microwave (the power cord is unplugged for this), turn it upside down over a table and shake it, pound the bottom, and shake it some more--likely the offending piece will drop out onto the table. If so, put it back together and whack it to see if that fixed the problem (cord plugged back in). This process can be repeated.

SOURCE: have to slam door to get oven to operate

I would check the door switch settings before the door damages the switches. Removing the cover may be dangerous!
The door catches can be adjusted when the cover is removed and disconnected from any power.

Remove from any power source, remove the cover of the cabinet. Slacken off the clamp mechanism and ease the clamp over the guide to allow the door to open. When the door levers are in place, the door may be easily adjusted by slackening off the screws that clamp the door catch/actuators in place whilst holding the door closed and then tightening the screws. The rear of the door may be adjusted by slackening the lower door hinge screws and adjusting as required.
I hope that helps.

I have to slam the door 5 times to get it to turn on

Have you tried leaving it after GENTLY closing the door once? Many have a timer so that the fan can remove condensation from the inside. If that doesn't work, you need to take it to the nearest Panasonic service centre to have the door microswitch adjusted or replaced. There are no self serviceable options with microwave ovens due to the disastrous damage operating one without the outer case can cause. The use special screws only the tech carry.

At least you have a good make, so worth having it fixed. I used Panasonic ovens in a restaurant setting.

Intermittent starting. imer will count down and you can hear a clicking. sometimes if you bang the side or slam the door it may operate again. may be a bad switch 11 years old thanks

Nick,
Usual life span of a microwave is 7 to 10 years. Unless you are going to try to attempt a repair yourself, I would recommend getting a new microwave. You will at least then be covered by a new warranty as well.

Please inspect the plastic latches that should actuate the door switches. Sounds like you may have broken one when slamming the door too hard

You must close the door hard or it will not start

The locking mechanism is not closing completely unless you slam the door because the plastic parts don't slide easily after a couple of years. We found that putting a small amount of vegetable oil on the 2 locking hooks in the door will allow the components to slide easily and close properly so the machine will function correctly.

Our panasonic inverter microwave (3 years old) needs repeated hard slams to shut the door so that the light goes off and the microwave will work. How do we fix this problem as I'm afraid we are going to...

We have a Panasonic Inverter microwave. Door became difficult to close and had to slam it hard while holding themicrowave to keep it from moving. When opening the door did not pop open but did unlatch. I ordered a new door lever from Panasonic. When got part I removed case from microwave and lever was okay. I then removed the perimeter strip on the inside of the door. With a screwdriver I stretched the spring at the bottom that keeps the door latches pulled downward. Spring still worked just not as stiff. Put perimeter piece back on the door and replaced housing (which I didn't need to remove in the first place), and then put a small drop of vegetable oil on the cams where the door latches hit when closing door. Viola, door opens and closed as new. Problem solved. Diagnosis: over time the latch tension spring hardens and gets too stiff. P.S.: I had several similar springs as backup in case I screwed up the original one.

Door got slammed and now it does nothing

There are two or three switches operated by the door latches in a microwave oven. When the door is slammed, they can be damaged or knocked out of adjustment. If the control board thinks the door is open, it won't allow the oven to operate. It's best to let a professional check the oven and adjust or replace the affected parts. Microwaves are hazardous devices, with lethal voltages exposed when the cover is off. Also, repairs involving door repairs can cause microwave leakage if they aren't done properly. But once the switches are operating properly your oven should be fine.

Door slammed and no microwave is dead

yep you got it in one, I must have advised about 10 people today about this. when the door is slammed the door protection circuit does not operate correctly and then takes out the mains fuse inside the unit. renove the case and locate the fuse, normally where the cable enters the unit. as long as the fuse is the correct amperage, lenght and diameter you have no problems. do not test the unit with the cover off and be careful as the capacitors can hold a lethal charge
