My bolan gas trimmer engine runs but the trimmer part at the the end of the shaft does not spin or rotate is there a cable or rod that connects the 2 ends of the trimmer that is broken?

SOURCE: Problem with gas trimmer staying started

That is sooooo right. I had the same problem and after putting the whole machine apart I finally spotted those two screws next to the carbutator, and by adjusting them I managed to get the problem fixed. Note that if the machine turns itself off when you hit the gas, it may be that the air intake or the gas intake are either too open or too close. So, adjust them to your flavor....

Most of these type units only allow you to replace the entire shaft assembly. Have one myself and could not get just gearbox.

SOURCE: Stihl FS45 2 cycle string trimmer. Bought in 5/06

Dealer says shaft has broken. Stihl had a problem with some FS45's doing this. They are trying to have it repaired under warranty.

SOURCE: Ref: Stihl FS46 string trimmer. Broken Flex shaft.

Remove orange sheild,remove single screw holding head in shaft then grab head with pliers and twist side to side until complete head is free.You should then be able to grab part of shaft.On power head loosen screws {about one turn each} that hold two white case halves near trigger,I think there are four,then there is a single torx screw on the bottom of lower case half in the middle that must be taken out to allow tube to be removed.Romove flexshaft from top.Check 4 plastic burnt to flexshaft,if there is you must replace tube liner as well,usally around bent part of tube the liner will go bad.

most likely you have stripped the shaft ,its basically a flexible connecting rod inside the metal pole that connects the motor to the gear at the other end

The rod that runs down the shaft spins but the line trimmer itself is not turning


Has square or spline end on cable either is not engaged with end or is broken off at head end. could also been pushed too far up in the motor end.

Motor works fine, but trimmer will not rotate


Have an assistant start and hold the trimmer. At idle, there should still be a little drag on the clutches to make the shaft spin on that split shaft trimmer with the accessory head removed. No need to rev it or do anything fancy, but teamwork will make it safer.

Now forget about the engine and clutches - does the accessory head spin freely when turned by hand (removed from engine still!) and with a clear rotation of the shaft end visible inside the connector socket? Is the shaft end square with sharply defines angles, or rounded off? Does swapping in a different accessory function normally and as expected?

Sometimes the nub end of the shaft wears. Worse, the socket on the engine side has eaten itself to pieces. Worse, worse yet, clutches in the engine side that engage the accessory shaft are worn and there is simply no transmission of power. Good luck, hopefully this info will set your boots in the right direction!

Weedeater starts fine but the string head will not spin. I removed the string head, and the shaft it connects to is not spinning either.


The shaft cable has either come loose at the head, or is broken at the engine most likely. Is this a 2 piece unit? If so, see if the cable turns with the grass trimmer section removed. If so, it is usually easiest to just replace the trimmer shaft section. One piece units require disassembly at the engine, and if you are not mechanically inclined, that can be a pain.

Doesn't sound like piston and ring problem. Sounds more like the flex shaft that connects to the engine may have an end that is worn not allowing for the extra load when you connect the attachments. Check the ends of the top flex shaft.

Trimmer dust cover hot to touch ... trimmer head flew off and in reinstalling the trimmer does not turn or only turns momentarily before engine shuts off


sounds like the drive cable is jammed.you need to remove the shaft from the engine and head and see if the cable spins freely.

It won't rotate


It is slipping because the clutch is worn. The only cure is a new one.
