The correction tape is not stealing the image. It seems that the ribbon is too high. If very genial pressure is put on the ribbon while underlining, it works. This is a rather new and not heavily used

You didn't give a model # so i'm guessing the ribbon is to high or the correction tape is stealing the impression. Be sure the ribbon is fully latched down and therre isn't a fold in the ribbon.

SOURCE: Wheelwriter 6 - Was typing and it just stopped

Solenoid pad is worn out. Look below left of the printwheel down inside the carriage and you should see a little white or opaque rubber pad. It needs to be replaced. You have to take it to a shop for proper repair. I have in the past, replaced it by digging the old one out with tweezers and hook. Then fish the new one in there.

SOURCE: Nakajima AE 800 will not underline words with new ribbon

We have had new cassettes that are faulty. The quickest way to test is to change a cassette from a machine that is ok onto the faulty one. If the problem goes away then the cassette that was on the machine is faulty.

How do I reset the AE-800 to forward the ribbon? A repairman showed me once but I have lost the "cheat sheet"

While holding the code key down press the period key then release. If this does not work turn off typewriter. Insert a sheet of paper in the t/w in the wide position. Turn on t/w while holding down the MR and #1 key. The t/w will start printing on it own. Allow it to print out 7 lines and then turn the t/w off. That should reset the typewriter.

Keyboard want work

If your machine is not printing properly:
1.Examine the ribbon cartridge to make sure it has not run out of Ribbon. If your ribbon appears silver or gray, install a new cartridge.
2. Ensure the black lever in the center of the carriage is pressed to the rear, towards the paper. If not press it to the rear to lock the Daisy Wheel into place.
3. With the typewriter turned off, press and hold down the "CODE" Key, the "SHIFT" Key, and the "TAB" Key.
4.Restore power with all three Keys depressed.
5.When the machine sounds a beep tone, release all three keys.
6.The carrier will move to the left indicating that the memory has been cleared and the machine has been reset.
7.Try typing.
If the problem continues, your unit will need servicing. You can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center in your area:

Wants to know how to underline name, title etc using my pc

Not much information here, but I assume you are using a word processor such as Microsoft Word or similar. To underline text you simply select the text with your mouse by pointing top the start of the text then holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse pointer to the end of the text. The selected text should be white on a black background. Then you can press "ctrl-u" - hold down the 'ctrl' key in the bottom left of the keyboard whilst pressing the 'u' key.

This approach work in most applications on Windows that support underlining.

Sounds like a bad keyboard.
There is not so much that could be done to repair a keyboard. Disassemble the laptop, check the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard. If the ribbon cable is loose, tighten it. If it is tight, replace the keyboard with a new one.

How do you underline

There are 3 ways to underline. Backspace and use the underscore key 2 left of the backspace, presscode and the U or I keys. If you are doing these things and underline isn't printing be sure the ribbon is fully latched down.

Hi,
Somehow the left ALT key is stuck in a pressed position. Usually when you press left ALT and the letter underlined in a menu, it deploys that menu. In the File menu, the F is underlined and in the View menu it is the V that is underlined, hence the behavior.

Hope it helps.

Letters & numbers not printing correctly

The most common reason for this is something interfering with the printwheel. Turn off machine. Take out the ribbon, then pull back on the black lever to the right of the printhammer. This will tilt the printwheel towards you. Look to see if there is anything caught in the printwheel. Also check to see if the corr tape is installed properly. Corr. tape and ribbon should both be between the two metal fingers and the metal cardholder. Push the black lever forward and look to make sure the two metal fingers are not bent into the printwheel. If they are, simply push them forward and bend them so they don't. Re-install the ribbon, making sure it goes on the other side of the fingers. Turn machine back on and test machine. If it still doesn't work, you will need a trained technition to determine the problem.

Hello. I had a similar problem, and Upstatoes helped me. Mine started with striker stuck forward, and then went to working for a few days, but sticking forward again And it was caused by the spring not being in the right place. But the correction tape housing is pushed up and pulled down by the white, adjustable piece on the right side, that has the screw holding it into the adjustment place. If you take off the ink ribbon, push the carriage to middle, and turn on the typewriter, there will be a switch at the top left of the keyboard, on the underside, you will need to flick with your finger, one time, as the carriage moves to the left. This is the reference switch, and you will be tricking the typewriter into thinking it is now in the left side start position. After this, you can see the white adjuster piece on the right side of the carriage, and, as you type a letter, also see if it is holding down the correction tape housing. Then when you hit the erase key, see if the cam on the inside (looking through the small holes in the correction tape housing) turns and pushes up this housing? It may be the tab in the white adjuster is not inside the grove of this cam. Either way, at that point, you may be able to see if something else is not as it should be? My problem was the long side of the spring was not underneth the white adjuster. (I had been putting it under the housing, and it was not helping ot push everything up like it should be.) Aparently this cam with the white adjuster tab in the groove holds everything down, easily, as you type, but has to have the spring help to push up when you use the earse key.
