Did it get wet at all? If so, there is an area under the track ball that is very sensitive to humidity. Cleaning that area with a brush to remove any of residue that may have remained after letting the phone dry can sometime get it up and running again. If you're out of warranty try to remove the trackball and clean the area below it if necessary. There is a Blackberry Repair Guide that shows how to open a Blackberry and remove the track ball yourself.
A few days ago I was at a camp and I had my phone in my back pocket on keyboard lock. When I pulled it out, it looked like it was turned off, so I thought the battery was dead. When I got back to my dorm I put it on the charger and turned it on. But the keyboard wasn't working, nor the trackball. All I could do was scroll. So I looked at a few forums and this IS a common problem. I read somewhere that if you take the trackball out and turn the phone on without the trackball in, then put the trackball back in, the keys should work. My carrier is Sprint and I read that they are quite difficult to deal with so I am about to try iy myself.
Can you see the icons? If not then perhaps you've just locked the keyboard?
If you can see the icons and just can't type anything then you will probably have to try a reset procedure or reload the O/S for it. If this is a phone with a package and warranty take it into the store. Keyboard problems have been known with this model.
The keyboard does not work. how do I fix ??
My 8330 keyboard just locked up on me yesterday. I was able to backup, but no amount of restoring or doing the suggestions on the BB support site fixed the frozen mouse-ball and keyboard. Went to a Verizon retail store and they could not fix it. Just got a new one (my second replacement). You might want to just do that as these models seem to be buggy.
