SOURCE: Freezer Troubles

Skap, the question is whether the evaporator coils are completely frosted up or just the top section. Frigidaire has had a lot of issues with restrictions which would cause just freezing on the top half. I will attach some pictures. Your unit has an adaptive defrost. I believe that you can advance it into defrost by pressing the light switch 5 or 6 times. If you pull the bottom grill, there should be a tech sheet with the instructions behind it. Usually when this adaptive defrost unit fails, you will not have a freezer fan, for it runs through this adaptive defrost board. Your heaters are calrod and usually do not fail. They can become unplugged due to ice build-up. You can check to see if you have 120V getting to them after putting the unit into defrost. If not, check the defrost thermostat (bi-metal). If it's bulged, it's usually a bad sign. Defrost the unit with a hair dryer while unplugged. You have to remove the back freezer panel to get at the bi-metal, defrost the unit and check the drain pan.

SOURCE: Freezer defrosts too long.

Outside of HVACRH20 excellent advice, here a few stats about this model. The main control board will monitor the resistance of the evaporator thermistor. This is located near the top of the evaporator. This thermistor determines when the unit goes into and out of defrost. The bi-metal is redundant to the operation. It will terminate the defrost only if the thermistor fails. Check the values of the thermistor with the attached chart. Catriver..post back

SOURCE: fridge doesn't get cold enough

you have either a Defrost heater / a defrost timer/ or a defrost bi-metal that is bad. if you post your model # i can look it up and show you how to set it into defrost to see if the heaters are ok
Since you replaced the timer already that leaves two things you need to check set it into defrost if you know how and remove the panel in the back wall of the freezer you should see the heater(s) are on if not check pwr 120vac at the heaters if 0 volts the bi-metal is bad

While the freezer is cold, cut out defrost thermostat and measure resistance, if open, replace, if it's ok check defrost heater.
Temporarily short the wires that went to the defrost thermostat and now force defrost.
If no defrost, you have a bad adaptive defrost board.

SOURCE: Refrigerator section on side by side losing cooling

Here is the Amana website with the manuals which should show you where the defrost timer etc. is located. Witht your model number and manual it will be a lot easer

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search.jsp?siteCd=AMA

And yes the defrost timer thermostat and heater are the most likely problem.

Do not let this keep running and running or you may lose your compressor too which means a lot more expense than now.

Why is my freezer on the top og my fridgerator not keeping anything cold?

The problem could be one of several things. There is a defrost timer in the unit and it tell the unit when to remove the ice on the coils. If the timer goes out, you can have ice blocking the air flow. The timer could also be sticking in the defrost mode and it never tells the unit to start cooling. Look in the refrigerator near the temp control and see if the dials are set correctly. If they are then you should replace the defrost timer.

My freezer works but my refrigerator does not. What the problem?

This can be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

Refrigerator portion temperature has dropped to 65-70 degrees even on highest setting. This is an older model manufactured in 1992 with the freezer on the top. Serial # GG516729.

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

No air circulating the no frost refrigerator. Electrolux 2 door

It sounds like a defrost problem. Maybe the defrost timer is not advancing or it could be the heater in the freezer. Find the defrost timer and advance it to defrost. You will hear a click and the compressor should turn off. Then wait about a minute, unplug the cord slow. You should see a spark when you unplug. If you do then the heater is working. Change the defrost timer. If no spark then it could be the heater or terminator.

Turbo air freezer

Check the time setting on the defrost timer. It may not be set to the correct number of minutes for defrost. Compare it with the side that is working properly for the right time of the cycle.
