Question about Plumbing
I have a gould js5 jet pump with a smart head. The smart head makes a low chattering sound and the pump does not come on. What might be the problem?

SOURCE: Gould Water pump Problem
sounds like cavitation in the pump due to the introduction of air. Check for leaks or cracks in the suction line so air isnt being induced into the pump.

My first thought was that of a water logged tank which causes short cycling, from your notes the tank is good (the tank may be partially water logged though) If the tank is ok and your getting short cycling (and the switch is good) I would guess your check valve down the well has failed. As the pump creates pressure then shuts off the water may be going right back down the well causing the pump to cycle again. This could also account for the poor water pressure as the check valve may be stuck slightly open allowing the system to loose pressure but only allowing a small amount of flow by when running. There could be a leak within the pumps drop-pipe and your loosing pressure through this leak. I expect you'll have to have the pump pulled.
I hope this may have helped,

Sounds like it could be low water, but here is a few questions to help me diagnose the problem
Is the pressure gauge showing any pressure ? If its holding at 25-30 psi and wont shut off, its probably the jet pack in the well. The jet pack has a nozzle and venturi that creates the suction to pull the water out of the well and into your house. If you pull this out of the well you have to replace the lines or else it will keep plugging up.
How old is the pump ?
What brand of pump ?
Take the cover off of the well casing and put string with a small weight on the end of it. Its easy to buy a roll of kite string and lower it into the well until it hits the bottom of the well. Mark the string when it bottoms out, then you can pull it out and see how much of the string is wet. This will tell you the water level in the well.
It could be the impeller in the pump. If this is the case, get another pump. Its not worth the time and effort to fix the old one and then have it go out on you again.
You said you primed it and it was ok ? If that's the case, it could be the check valve. This is a one way valve that lets the water up from the well, but wont let it back down into the well. To check this shut the water off to the house and see if it holds pressure. If it does not than either the check valve is bad or you have a pin hole in the line going down into the well.
I hope this helps you. Let me know if you get it fixed or need more help !
